You are not required to have medical insurance to enter Ukraine for a short visit. IF you are planning to live there for a time, it might be a good idea.
 
Your current insurance might cover you in Ukraine, but the doctor or hospital will require you to pay up front and try to collect from the insurance company later. The same would probably apply to any insurance.
 
If you try to use medical insurance in Ukraine, they will raise all the costs! IF you get sick in Ukraine, you should try to get treatment at the cost for a Ukrainian. You need to have connections and bribe the right person to do this.

I myself never needed to purchase medical insurance since I am retired Navy. There is an American medical clinic in Kiev that services embassy personnel. They also can service retired military who use tri-care.

According to the Ukraine legislation, foreign travelers are obliged to have the medical insurance covering health emergency cases. If you already have an insurance purchased from a non-Ukrainian insurance company, please, make sure it is valid for Ukraine and this company has an office here.

You should be able to get ins. at the airport when you step off the plane. Not really very expensive for a short stay.
