Escape From Camp 14
« on: May 15, 2012, 11:28:31 PM »
This is not a FSU topic per se, although the description of life in a communist prison camp is similar to gulag stories from the USSR.

I am posting this because it is both fascinating, and, I think, important for us to recognize what some humans today still endure.  I knew a great deal about gulag life, but there were still things here that surprised and shocked me.

If you follow the link, there is a podcast from one of Canada's most popular radio programmes, The Current.  It is about Shin Dong-hyuk, the only person ever known to have been born in a North Korean prison camp and escaped it.  The Current usually does 20 minute pieces, but this was rather longer, to tell more of Shin Dong-hyuk's story of life in a prison camp and his escape.

His story has also been told by Blaine Hardin, a former Washington Post reporter.  I have linked to Mr. Hardin's book as well.  Well worth the read.

After the fall of communism, the biggest mistake Boris Yeltsin's regime made was not to disband the KGB altogether. Instead it changed its name to the FSB and, to many observers, morphed into a gangster organisation, eventually headed by master criminal Vladimir Putin. - Gerard Batten
