Student loan questions/problems
« on: November 03, 2012, 01:24:30 AM »
Hey all:

Years ago I fell in with a bad crowd and got mixed up with "higher education".

I had some amount of student loans.

I've been paying on them for about 7 years now and am "rehabilitated" according to the government and student loan companies.

I have paid a tremendous amount, but still have a ways to go.

When I first got started, I had problems with getting a professional license.

I've heard rumors that they are going to restrict people with student loans from getting passports...but that is just a rumor at this point.

So my question is thus:

Does having student loans have any bearing on a US citizen being able to marry a foreign woman?

I seriously doubt it, the way you phrased the question.  The government cannot prevent you from marrying a foreign women.  The government can play havoc with your proving you can support her via the visa process if they so wish.

I would not worry about it for now.  The biggest challenge is to find a foreign woman that you are compatible with.  After your visits to her native country and falling in love, then you can worry about which method to get her to the US.

Good Luck

Loans, of any kind, do not have a bearing on your ability to meet, marry and bring here a foreign woman. Your ability to support her does. Your question, although important to you, is way ahead of the curve.

I haven't been down that particular path; but I thought you had to show ability to support, which logically doesn't just include gross income coming in, but what is left after payment of outstanding obligations such as student loans.

In other words, it is not logical that I guy with 100 K in income and 90 K payments on debt required each year could meet criteria; whereas a guy with 15 K income and no payments on debt required each year might not meet the criteria.
A beautiful woman is pleasant to look at, but it is easier to live with a pleasant acting one.

On K1 visas, you are required to meet the minimum poverty requirements, ( there is a chart on the govt website) which is determined by the number of people you are supporting. Husband and wife is 2, a child would make it 3. They look at gross income.
