Jersey Guy: Get used to it, most of them subscribe to the cold drink - sore throat theory along with a collection of other similar BS. It's not all bad, we as Westerners have some pretty screwed up theories also, all RW's are slim, hot etc........................

I don't know how common this is/was but when I brought some good scotch over to Siberia some 15 years ago I told the family it is best served on ice cubes. Several hours later when I returned to drink some there were strange cubes on the table. Where did these come from ?
Oh, my father went down to the river and chopped them out. I ask about ice trays in refrig. and was told they don't have these. Even today my wife's family [different family and 10 years later] doesn't keep a tray of cubes.
How common this is I don't know but maybe it is connected to this story. And of course a "cold wind" brings countless problems.

Many have this sensitivity or belief that  it causes a sore throat or cold.
or can kill you.

Almost just as many are perfectly fine with a frozen margarita.

Just relax, as it's really the least of the conflicting behaviours you'll likely encounter
in the arena of health concerns ..

I like room temperature/warm drinks.
I've never liked any "extreme" things like iced drinks, hot drinks, spicy food, too much sauce, too sweet/too salty things. To me all mentioned above hurts and affects the taste buds in a bad way which prevents you from enjoying the true food flavor and sometimes makes you eat more.

This is how people from different cultures look at "cold" (drinks, weather, etc.)
I did same after we arrived here- warmed juice or milk up for my 8 yo. Poor boy had to have thermal underwear to school!))))
Months later we both had cold drinks with ice and wore lighter clothing.

I think it's all quite individual. I live in USA since 2005, and still not particularly fond of iced drinks for the reason described above.

Apropos of odd cultural preferences ;D.

I visited the USA a few times for varying periods, and almost every time I sat down at a restaurant, the very first thing they would bring me was a large glass of very cool water with several ice cubes floating in it, even though I had not asked for it and  their venue was fully air-conditioned :o.

And considering most of their patrons' girth, I don't think they expected them  to be just off some heavily dehydrating activity :D.

Do I detect some sarcasm here  :o  Sadly, obesity is an epidemic here and getting worse by the month with no answers in sight. It is already pushing up our national health care bill by billions. Even the children. For the fun of it google "people of Wal Mart". Also on Utube.

Lol, yes indeed, 'correct' is highly subjective and never more so than when it involves a RW.

If I were you, I would have asked them whether that healthy and tasty drink was the only offering on their appetizer list  ;D

you can probably ask the photographer who his model was :)

It is a common business practice - cold stimulates patrons at restaurants to order more food, as if us Americans need to eat more.

This is just the standard in USA.  And, it is costless for the patron.

Also, you don't have to worry about the safety of the water OR the ice-cubes as they haven't been chopped from a frozen river. . . unless maybe you are in Minnesota in the winter.

And, if you don't want the ice cold water (as I often do not) don't mess around with asking the waiter to change it.  Do like I do . . . take the glass to men's room, dump it out and refill with tap water to your specifications.  Do this quietly and without holding the glass up for everyone to view, and you won't raise a ripple with anyone.

I don't know if that is their strategy and doubt it works physiologically :-\. Anyway, paese che vai, usanza che trovi (old Italian saying: visit a different country, find different habits) ;).

Many years ago our restaurants used to use salt very liberally on the assumption that it would make their patrons thirsty and order more to drink. Then came the alarms about too much salt adversely affecting heart and arteries, so they made a 180° change. Nowadays I often have to ask for a salt dispenser, if not already on the table, to compensate.

Although I used to add salt as a matter of course when I was younger, I was told long ago that it's an insult to the cook, showing that they haven't got the flavour correct!  I will put a tiny pinch of salt in the pot when I'm cooking, but that's all.  In contrast, my late father would just about up-end the salt shaker over every meal - it nearly made me ill to watch him!

It is actually a law in many states or municipalities that water must be placed on the table in commercial eating establishments. Of course this doesn't include the ice cubes in the water but, it is generally preferred cold.

Forget ML's advice of taking it to the bathroom for the fresh tap water, chances are it came from the same source anyway.  :D

I never drink that water either. If you ask them to take it away most generally they will

Mine would do that with the pepper grinder :o, it took me many years to eventually sprinkle some on my scrambled eggs.
