Margaret Thatcher died at 87
« on: April 08, 2013, 11:41:53 AM »
(The Mendeleyev Journal)

Margaret Thatcher a height=252

Margaret Thatcher, a powerful force in British politics, died on Monday of a stroke, her family said. British authorities say that the grand lady, who along with Ronald Reagan and Mikhail Gorbachev ushered in the end of the Cold War, will be buried with military honors. She died at age 87, with the distinction of being Britain’s first female prime minister, holding that position for 11 years. She had been in poor health for months.

Current Prime Minister David Cameron offered tributes and called her “a great leader, a great prime minister, a great Briton.” Mrs. Thatcher had asked not to be given a full state funeral and PM Cameron said that instead she would be given a ceremonial funeral with military honors with the service at St Paul’s Cathedral. Flags have been lowered to half mast at Downing Street.

Buckingham Palace released a statement saying that the Queen was sad to hear the news and that an expression of sympathy had been sent to Mrs. Thatcher's family.

Speaking from Amsterdam, Russian President Vladimir Putin said, "I believe that we have lost a major politician, I'm sorry about this and would like to offer condolences on behalf of the Russian leadership to the British government and people."

Mrs. Thatcher and US President Ronald Reagan played key roles in working with Soviet President Mikhail Gorbachev to end the Cold War with the Soviet Union. She also transformed the UK's economy during her tenure in office with lower taxes, smaller government and free trade policies.

While the head of government, Mrs. Thatcher was known as the “Iron Lady” for her strong will and personality. Some of her more famous quotes include "If you want something said, ask a man; if you want something done, ask a woman" and "I am not a consensus politician. I'm a conviction politician."

May God grant her eternal memory.

A certain section of our society did not care for strong and no nonsense policies but we voted her into power 3 times over an eleven year period so that should tell you much.

RIP

Only fuzzy thinking leftists disliked her.

She did great things for the UK, even Chairman Blair couldn't manage to undo all her good work.

Sad day. Cameron could learn much from her style.

Thank you Manny and Vinny.   :clapping:

My feeling is that over time the lustre of her accomplishments will outshine these fake controversaries.  Do you agree?

Rand Paul is no Margaret Thatcher.  Neither is Nigel Farage.
After the fall of communism, the biggest mistake Boris Yeltsin's regime made was not to disband the KGB altogether. Instead it changed its name to the FSB and, to many observers, morphed into a gangster organisation, eventually headed by master criminal Vladimir Putin. - Gerard Batten

You could say that about Margret Thatcher before she was Margret Thatcher.  It is easy to be dismissive, but I might agree with you on Nigel being less Thatcherian and more Churchillian.  Mr. Farange has stalked the EU much the same way Churchill has stalked and brought down Hitler.

I see these men as leaders of their movements and potentially of their country.

She was unique.  She broke through many glass ceilings, was the hardest worker in her party, always courteous to underlings, though she could be difficult to colleagues.   She was principled and practical.  I don't see those qualities in the men you referenced.

Paul was  doctor and Farange a businessman before coming to government not careerist politicians.  They both work hard and are very courteous.  Did they break glass ceilings?  Maybe not, but shall we select our world leaders only on gender?

All of those factors, combined, made her who she was.  Both the politicians you named are lightweights.
