Neither do I.

I do have a theory though (FWIW). I think it was because those typical Soviet-style homes are so small, thus the rooms are far too small for those rugs to fit on the floor. So this revelation come to light after bringing these rugs home then realizing the fact...instantaneously, the 'walls' became the only logical place for them.

If you visit villages in Central Ukraine, you will often see something covering the outside northern or northeastern portion of a house.  Often, it is corn.  This is a form of insulation, as are kilims on walls.

Carpets hanged on the wall by the bed/sofa bed. As housing is so small (specially apartments) most people have sofas that turn into beds. Again due to small housing almost always beds are placed alongside the wall. In the winter walls are really cold and so carpets used to cover wall. Aka cozy 

Anyway they are cool, I think I still will be able from memory draw every swirl from the one that was hanged alongside my bed.  Studied pattern of it for countless hours in attempt to fall asleep for many years

That's the first time I've heard of a practical reason for the rugs on the wall. I saw in the forum several years ago one poster surmised it was because the rugs were usually quite nice and expensive. My wife has never offered a reason and the "rug on the wall" and it has been a long time chuckle for us both, for different reasons.

Of course it would but for that to happen every time one wishes required to have own bedroom. We have been living in 2 room apartment, so one bedroom and living room. Mum use to sleep on sofa bed in living room and I with my older brother have been sharing bedroom. If you share space with others you have to adapt to their wishes/needs/etc. So subsequently there been numerous times when I may try to sleep and my brother had to do or wished to do something (read book, do homework, etc) or other way around.

Many rugs are produced in Armenia, Azerbaijan, and some other Caucasian communities.  It is not uncommon for people in such regions to hang rugs from the walls, so maybe the Russians adopted this concept much like adopting Georgian cuisine.
Because of hanging, many fine antiques rugs were kept in pristine condition and commanded top money in the West.   None of those pictured in the photos is valuable.   
 
BTW, I never dated a RW with a hanging carpet.  Some took me for a magic ride however.
