If you go back more than 10 years ago, Ukraine citizens needed to go to the US embassy in Warsaw, Poland for all K type visas. Then, you went to the visa interview in the morning and came back in the afternoon of the same day to pick up your passport with visa attached.  A lot of US men went to Warsaw to meet their fiancee, buy airplane tickets, and not return to Ukraine. It was really easy to get a visa then!

That Warsaw trip was amazing.

Paul, what country is your wife from, and what embassy location?

Yes, the rules and procedures are different at various US embassies.

My wife is from Romania and she had her interview at the embassy in Bucharest.

From the US Embassy, Moscow website:

Please note that no one may accompany applicants into the Embassy's visa waiting room. This includes American citizens, spouses, attorneys, sponsors, friends, and family members.

I also read that... But to add to the confusion the FAQ #13 under the immigrant section of Moscow Embassy site states:
13. Can my fiancé(e)/spouse/relative petitioner come with me to the interview?

Yes. We especially encourage petitioners who have filed for spouses or fiancé(e)s to appear at the interview. Aside from petitioners, however, no one may accompany adult applicants into the Embassy's visa waiting room.

I can only assume that one rule applies to non-immigrant visas??? :-\
