Hi guys,

Haven't been on this site since I was living in Ukraine in 2005-06, am now married to a RW and looking to spend the next year there with her family, as we just had our first kid. But in prepping for my move, I see the Russian Federation has made it's business visa more stringent. Used to be, you could get a multi-entry, 12-month visa and stay on it through the year. Now you have to leave the country for 90 days each 180 day period, so it's pretty much useless if you want to reside in Russia.

I'm at the first stage of the bureaucratic muddle, looked through some old posts, tried a few searches, and know nothing.

There's got to be someone on here who is living or wants to live in Russia and knows the answer. Since these new rules went into effect in 2007, how is it done? Can you get a temporary residency permit from the States through a consulate? Can you go to Russia on a business visa and then stay while processing the temporary residency permit there?

I thought I was past all the madness, but if you're married to a RW, I see, it never goes away. Thank god the other stuff is still unbelievable.

Thanks for your help,

Stephan
Lived in Kharkov, Ukraine 2005-2006. Great city.

Did you ever get a reply on this?

I obtained a 3 year multi-entry to Russia a year ago that allows me to stay 6 months at a time. The 6 month period is "reset" after each visit. In other words, as long as I do a "border run" every 6 months, I can stay in Russia for 3 years (provided that I re-register every time I arrive).

He was last seen here in April 2012, so I guess that we will never know.

Well, since we're on the subject, my Visa allows me 1095 days "in country (in Russia)" in the 3 year period with the exception that no one visit be more than 6 months. And so, as long as I do a border run to Ukraine, Lithuania, Croatia or some other country, I can "live" in Russia for 3 years.

How does everyone else do for their visas?

I understand that EU folks can get 5 year multi-entry Biz visas?
