Observing behavior in restaurants
« on: April 18, 2006, 12:13:56 PM »
For new guys starting out, I thought I would pass along this great advice:

http://news.yahoo.com/s/usatoday/20060414/bs_usatoday/ceossayhowyoutreatawaitercanpredictalotaboutcharacter

The article is about CEO's of major companies but it applies equally well to Russian women.  How she treats the waiter when he makes a mistake is the same way that she will treat you when you screw up.  If you think you have found a sweet and caring woman, watch her interaction with people in the service industries.  Is she quick to forgive their mistakes and smooth things over or does she blow up into a rage because the waitress didn't bring a steak knife?  This is one situation where you don't need to know the language to understand the red flags.

"Watch out for people who have a situational value system, who can turn the charm on and off depending on the status of the person they are interacting with," Swanson writes. "Be especially wary of those who are rude to people perceived to be in subordinate roles."

This is sooooo true it isn't funny. I was a bartender/waiter in my youth & boy I took some crap out of people until I was getting close to changing jobs then I gave it back twice as much as they gave, LOL.

I view people who are nice & sweet around their boss & the other executives but treat the waiter like crap as nothing more than suckups. They know the executive crowd can elevate them to more power so they have to stay on their good side but when dealing with a waiter they know this person can be of no future help to them so they can treat them like crap & get away with it. Too bad most of them arn't aware that some of those waiters are now their peers & bosses!!!

"Why would people treat me differently? Your value system and ethics need to be constant at all times regardless of who you are dealing with."

Precisely. If you can turn yourself on & off depending on who you are addressing or whom you are with then in my book, you cannot be trusted. I treat everybody the same until I'm done dirt, then they are on my sh!t list!!! and they get  treated the same as everybody else on my Sh!tlist!!!!

I think this is one of the best barometers for judging anybody. Not just how they treat the waiter but how they treat their friends & family & how they talk about other people when the other people are out of earshot also tells volumes about a persons character. People that indulge in such behavoir are two faced in my book & will stab you in the back the first time it is to thier advantage.

BC,

Perhaps you are not properly attired. Try something like this and see if your chances for a tip improve...

Put a few tattoo's and a big gut, and that could be me !!!!
Your Mom is so dumb that she tried to minimize a 12 variable function to a minimal sum of products expression using a karnaugh map instead of the Quine-McCluskey Algorithm.

What if your like me and treat your boss like crap (cause hes an ass) and are nice to waitresses?  I never really understood why people yell at waitresses or cashiers.  Its not like they set the prices or cook the damn food.  I call over the owner and yell at him if I am that annoyed but never a cashier or waitress (unless they are rude).  The last 8 women I dated were all waitresses at places I eat regularly.

I read threads like this every so often and I always cringe a little bit when I read them.  But, first things first: If she's a witch to waiters, taxi drivers, shop girls, you, then look out!

However, unless you speak or understand Russian very well, be careful about judging what you are hearing.  Ask her if she was mad at the waitress.  The Russian language has the accents placed differently than in English.  What sounds like a question to a Russian, sounds like an accusation to us.  Thus, a friendly exchange can sound like an argument to our ears.

So, ask her.  If she's always ticked off at everyone, chances are she's going to be perpetually ticked off at you too.
