Renouncing Ukrainian Citizenship
« on: June 29, 2014, 05:27:22 PM »
 Greetings,

My wife and daughter will soon write the Canadian Citizenship exam, when they are granted citizenship they will be required to renounce their Ukrainian Citizenship. Has anyone had any experience doing this recently? What is the process? Thank you.

...you automatically lose it by action of law. You would still not have to "renounce" it. Many countries do enforce such a rule and this is exactly what they do. Once you automatically lose the citizenship, you are simply supposed to not use the passport, and not claim to be a citizen. You don't need to inform their government of anything, until the next time you want to go to that country, and then you go to their consulate and appy for a visa (at which point they might require you to bring your former passport of that country).

At the ceremony when your wife becomes a citizen of Canada, she may have to renounce her Ukrainian citizenship. That, however, does not mean that she must hand over her Ukrainian passport.

For some reason , Canadians still pledge allegiance to the Queen of England.
Whatever.

A passport will quite naturally expire anyway after 10 years.

Also, as stated on the passport..

It is the property of the government of Ukraine.

That has nothing to do with citizenship.

So?

The poster mentioned 'handing over a passport'.
My wife still has hers [Ukrainian].

I was explained that the only way you can renounce your citizenship is in front of the appropriate government official of YOUR country of birth.

The fallacy that you renounce your country of origin's citizenship during the swearing ceremony of your new country has gone far too long.

Try this. Once your wife takes her Canadian citizenship, go to Ukraine and go to renew her Ukrainian passport and see what they say. Better yet, tell them she has a Canadian passport. It will only make the renewal of her passport more expensive.

it is very possible your citizenship can be different to your country of birth ,

my wife was born in russia ,lived there 20 years,  at the break up of the soviet union she stayed in ukraine   and was thus granted  ukraine citizenship

Hmmm, sorry, who did tell you that?

I have obtained my Canadian Citizenship in April 2014 and I don't have any desire to renounce my Ukrainian citizenship. Canada does not require me to do it - let say some countries, like Germany, DO want you to renounce the previous citizenship it they grant you German citizenship. But Canada is not one of them, they let you stay Ukrainian citizen.

Ukrainian law say you SHOULD apply for renouncing if you get another country citizenship, but it's not a requirement. There's no punish, no penalty, no criminal responsibility for having the second country passport in Ukrainian law. So you can renounce it because they say "you should". Or you don't do anything, just keep your Canadian + Ukrainian passports - and nothing happens.

The worst can happen by a current law is described that "the obtaining of the second country citizenship COULD be a ground for terminating your Ukrainian citizenship that should be done by a special order issued by President Of Ukraine"

I don't think that your wife or me are so important persons for the President of Ukraine would hunt us and issued the personal decrees.  :)

It's left as a "whip" for the politicians who all keep second passports - could be Israel or German ones.
