Russian invasion
« on: May 30, 2006, 07:32:51 PM »
Just would like to report on my In Laws recent visit here to San Diego. They have seemed to gotten into the concept of visiting here now. Their first trips were filled with sight seeing and day trips to LA/Hollywood/Beverly Hills, Palm Springs and even Vegas. Now they seem content to just lay back and enjoy San Diego in it's finest. We have offered to take them up to San Fransisco, but they declined.

Their days start off rather slow with tea and a light breakfast followed by my Father in law putzing in the yard with our plants and flowers. My Mother in law has the same schedule but her putzing is about the house inside. Of course they seem to enjoy sunbathing in the yard with some quick dips in our pool. My Father in law's pool game has improved dramatically as he practices on our table daily. They really are a joy to have around. Needless to say my wife is thrilled too.

This weekend they asked if we could go to a brunch that we had taken them to on previous visits. The first time we took them, they were in shock with the amount of food served, but I guess they have gotten over the shock now. After brunch I arranged for us to have a 26' power cruiser to do a tour of San Diego Bay for a few hours. Everyone had a blast and I am sure my Father in law will be showing his buds back in Russia his photos of him acting as captain. I managed to get some reaction from my Mother in law after doing some Sharp high speed turns! Been after the wifey about us getting a boat and this may have just got her over her hesitations.

Yesterday, I prepared a full blown Thanksgiving dinner for the four of us and a few Ukrainian friends. I know it was Memorial Day, but I had these thoughts since it was Thanksgiving here. Mom as always wanted to help out n the worst way, so I let her stuff the turkey. I know she is amazed by my cooking. I don't think my Father in law knows how to make tea. She has said that he would starve to death with a refrigerator full of food. The turkey, dressing, mashed potatoes and yams were all a big hit. The cranberry sauce was a little "out there" for them and they never quite grasped the concept of gravy. They even understood the Thanksgiving tradition of overeating after dinner was over. Needless to say there was many heart warming "Thanksgiving" toasts through out the evening. I'm going to truly miss them when they go home next week.

Outstanding, KenC. I love Thanksgiving. Unfortunate, or maybe it is fortunate, for me Elena has no family, other than her son. When she and he come that is it. There will be no more. I am looking forward to having my family adopt her and her son. We all have the best of Thanksgiving dinners every year.

The cranberry sauce was a little "out there" for them

This brought to mind the first time I made a dinner like this Elena had this funny look on her face and I asked her what was wrong and she held up the cranberry sauce and asked why we put jam on our turkey.

Sounds like you are all having a wonderful time! Thanks for sharing it.

Sounds great KenC,
Can you tell me if it is easy to bring a parent or sibling over for a visit?
My wife's mother is ill and I think she can receive better treatment in the US. I was thinking a tourist visa for several months would be doable. My wife's brother doesn't play golf but he likes scuba diving.

Clyde,

If your M-I-L is seriously ill, unless you are King Midas rich, you might not be able to pay for expensive medical treatment in the US.  I'm pretty sure your health insurance won't cover her needs here.  I'd think long and hard before I yanked her out of a place where she gets at least some medical care and brought her to a place where she'd get none at all.

Just a thought.

Ken, sounds great.  Why not have them go to US board certified physicians that practice in Moscow / Kiev for Ukraine?  Same goes for dental.  Is it because they have confidence / like their local physicians?  I've thought about medical care for my MIL / FIL hopefully one day far in the future - and convincing them to go to board certified physicians in Moscow is the only thing that makes sense to me.

Jb is thinking smart here, Clyde. As I understand it there are more than one type of hospitals in EU. The free state ones and the private ones. The private ones, which are not free, are supposed to have better facilities. If you are bent on spending mone for medical treating it would seem less costly for you to have mom check into a private local hospital than to bring her to the US. Heck, why not the Mayo Clinic if you can afford it?
