Mail Order Bride Controversy
« on: May 24, 2006, 12:57:35 PM »
Hey Folks,

I want to draw your attention to a useful piece of information contained on the Wikipedia site, here -- http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mail_order_bride

You will note, of course, that the beginning of the citation announces a dispute and encourages participation in resolution of the dispute.

I urge EVERYONE to read through the material - form your OWN opinions as to the veracity of the claims and claimants - and PARTICIPATE in the process to resolve this. Here is the link to the appropriate 'Talk' page for resolution -- http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talk:Mail-order_bride

Why do I feel this is important? I have ALWAYS been opposed to the phrase "Mail Order Bride." It was not how I met my bride - and it is not how I see anyone else meeting theirs. This is NOT to say that we do not see some agencies who try to draw people in with this insane notion - but the reality is quite different. HOWEVER - the public does NOT understand what we know - they have NOT lived the insanity of the USCIS bureaucracy - they have NOT worked HARD to overcome the geographic, language and cultural barriers that ALL of us have contended with for many years. For many (most?) of the ignorant public - what we did is: view a catalog - place an order - and someone delivered us a wife. And THAT misconception is EXACTLY how IMBRA legislation was made into law. Through ignorance and a misguided public.

We need to, as a group, become more activist in our COLLECTIVE position about the misrepresentation of people married to foreign wives. To my mind - those objections are misguided and misinformed - AND they represent a significant level of xenophobia.

Will a correction in Wikipedia change all that? No, of course not - but if it inspires you (and me) to become more activist in correcting the misinformation - than at least it's a start.

Go vote. Now.

- Dan

I think that a change to wikipedia will help a lot of people... these online encyclopedie is the more big, the more visited on the web... and i like the idea that members here can share some knowledge with other people in other place...

I read most of the wiki.. didn't find anything that really made me want to regurgitate.

I don't object to the term MOB, just misuse of it applying to any foreign wife.  Actually only one person ever asked.. my mother.  I told her 'no' and that was that.  If I had gone the agency route I would have answered 'yes' and that would have been that.

Right, not a bad article... curious to see the result when the discussion will be resolved...

I concentrate only on the demographics section and the myth that you have more women that men in ex-USSR... just find a new table on the russian census, very interesting...

http://www.perepis2002.ru/ct/doc/English/1-8.xls

Since we are mainly seeking women in the working age range, these table allow to see the population of men and women for each regio ( oblast ) in function of "under working age - working age - over working age"...

EDIT : Just put the table in the download section, in anycase hat the link don't work anymore in the future

 In November 2204 this was one of the rageing threads on the old St. Johns list...and this was my reply to a question...What is a Mail Order Bride...

Bear in mind There are not any MAIL ORDER...BRIDES. That would be slavery... we do not own another human being EVER.....
          ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The G.I.s have been bringing women of other
nations home for years, and I have encountered this same
stupid attitude.These are the brightest and best, I
think their country has to offer. Well educated and
strong survivers....
Every generation has had it's name for them...and
refused to accept them....sometimes. Often, it has
been a comedy of errors.. misunderstandings, and at
other times downright hatefulness.
I have noted, that when youngsters don't know ... they
bluster. This often happens with a newly arrived
immigant....or they pull into a shell.
I have also known men, that would browbeat and tell
there newly arrived wife...*You are in my country
now...and you have no rights!* I worked for awhile
with other military wives, who would take her under our
wings, until she knew she wasn't alone and helpless.
It is very intiminating to be in a place, where you
are a stanger, and not able to understand what is
happening around you. If your spouse doesn't HELP and
relate accuratly to you....it is scary and very hard.
I can tell you this, I really don't care what lable
others give Irina and Basil....they ARE *my daughter
and grandson* now and forever! And I love them dearly.
Post note .....These two awe me, and challange every day....
May those that love us, love us.
And those that don't love us,May God turn their hearts.
And if He doesn't turn their hearts,May He turn their ankles,
 So we will know them by their limping.
God put your arm about my shoulder... and your hand over my MOUTH!
Marriage success statistics
The United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) reports that "...marriages arranged through these services would appear to have a lower divorce rate than the nation as a whole, fully 80 percent of these marriages having lasted over the years for which reports are available." [2]
Well another good reason... :)
