Parents of Crimean pupil summoned because of drawing showing a Ukrainian flag and Tatar tamgas


The parents of a Crimean pupil were called in by the Simferopol school administration for a “preventive and educational conversation”.

The incident took place during a lesson on “The world around us”; the children were asked to “Colour the Russian flag” in the section “What is our Homeland?” Instead of drawing the Russian tricolour flag, a young schoolchild coloured the flag in blue and yellow, drew several tamgas (national emblem of the Crimean Tatars) and wrote an inscription “Nasha Rodina Krym” (Crimea is our Homeland).

There is another case when five Crimean Tatar students refused to stand up for the national anthem of Russia at a Crimean university, triggering a mass of court proceedings.

In a Bakhchisaray school, instead of reading “Russia is our Homeland”, a pupil stood up and announced loudly that “Qırım (Crimea) is our Homeland”. The parents, who were summoned by school authorities, praised their child’s presentation.

Yesterday, several Ukrainian symbols appeared at bus stops in Krasnoperekopskiy district, Crimea; as a result, local Cossacks, FSB officers and the police raided the houses of Crimean Tatars.
