The people of Ukraine have shown incredible bravery and made huge sacrifices in their desire to control their own destiny.
From time to time we see people still showing ignorance of these events of recent Ukrainian history. Here is extensive series of links to explanations of events that have created Ukraine today and will direct the future of Ukraine.

What was Euromaidan?

With Euromaidan, Ukrainian society made a choice to definitely leave the Soviet era behind and become part of the free and democratic world. The rebellion against tyranny was guided by a dream of a society governed by law and justice. On this page, we offer you a taste of the revolution and what it means for Ukraine and the region.

EUROMAIDAN

Confused about events in Ukraine? We don't blame you. The protests started when then-President Yanukovych declined to sign the Association Agreement with the EU at the end of November 2013 and escalated into a de-facto revolution that left a hundred dead. Immediately after, Russia started a stealthy annexation of Crimea and takeover of South-Eastern Ukraine. The latter, being unsuccessful, has led to a frozen conflict in Donbas with which Russia hopes to continue to destabilize Ukraine. Here is the a short yet comprehensive guide through the chronicle of newest Ukrainian history - the Euromaidan revolution and subsequent Russian occupation and hybrid war. By Borislaw Bilash II, author of Primer about Russia's hybrid war.

During 18-22 February 2017, Ukraine will honor the memory of the Euromaidan protesters killed three years ago in the bloodiest clashes that took the lives of over a hundred unarmed people.
Many here have visited the memorial at Maidan -- it is quite chilling .

Ukrainians commemorate Heaven’s Hundred Heroes massacred three years ago on Euromaidan

Called the “Heaven’s Hundred,” the name containing an allusion to the Kozak XVII century army Sotnia [“Hundred”] companies who were reinstated as divisions of task forces at the Maidan protests, the list of killed activists actually numbers 107 people. 73 of them, as well as 11 law enforcers, were killed in the clashes in Kyiv on 18-20 February 2014.

The protesters killed on Euromaidan were awarded as Heroes of Ukraine post-mortem.

The complexities  of what has happened in Ukraine is often hard to summarise -- but -the quoted words explain quite simply.

The Kremlin’s existential threat

Putin's patiently and consistently repeated lies and fantasies about Ukraine are not just propaganda and disinformation.

They are actually a survival tactic.

Because what actually happened in Ukraine three years ago this month -- a genuine middle class uprising that overthrew a corrupt and authoritarian regime -- is seen by Putin's corrupt and authoritarian regime as an existential threat.

An uprising in which ordinary citizens are willing to fight and die for a democratic future is an existential threat, so they have to call it a coup.

The idea that Ukrainian civil society has agency of its own is an existential threat, so they have to say its actions were sponsored and directed from abroad.

And the idea that an independent Ukraine can make independent decisions of its own is an existential threat, so it has to be discredited and destabilized.
