Lyudmila Pavlichenko - Soviet Hero - Film on Amazon
« on: December 29, 2016, 07:49:41 PM »
Luda is an incredible Soviet woman who won the Gold Star medal of the Soviet Union Hero.  She was a sniper in Odessa and Sevastopol against the Nazis.   In a period of about one year, she is credited with  killing 309 "fascists."  She even took out a Nazi tank armed only with her sniper rifle.

Ukraine and Russia co-produced a 2015 film about her, entitled "Battle of Sevastopol."  My wife and I watched it last night, and we both thought it a good film even though she dislikes combat films.  The film is available on Amazon, and they will give you a free 30-day trial if you are not a subscriber.

The film is better than debating politics at RWD.  It shows some interesting vignettes of life in Ukraine in the 30s and 40s.  Not much different than when I visited there.  :D  For a trailer,

I was surprised that Russia and Ukraine co-produced a film in 2015.

Amazon also has the 1967 Soviet film, the Commissar.

Your link said production started a year before the conflict started between Russia and Ukraine. The conflict threatened the completion of the film but obviously they finished it. Wife watched in in her language and it was titled "Unbreakable", not "Battle of Sevastopol".

Wife also dislikes war films but tends to like them after watching them. Saving Private Ryan, We Were Men, and Fury were some she liked. I had to drag her and my son to watch the recently released Hacksaw Ridge and they thanked me afterward. Excellent movie and true story of a soldier that refused to carry a gun but did more than most men in war.
Fund the audits, spread the word and educate people, write your politicians and other elected officials. Stay active in the fight to save our country. Over 220 generals and admirals say we are in a fight for our survival like no other time since 1776.

Phil, I assume you know this other film:
Quote
Enemy at the Gates is a 2001 American-French war film written and directed by Jean-Jacques Annaud, starring Jude Law and Joseph Fiennes. The film's title is taken from William Craig's nonfiction book Enemy at the Gates: The Battle for Stalingrad (1973), which describes the events surrounding the Battle of Stalingrad in the winter of 1942/43. Although fictional, the film is loosely based on war stories told by Soviet sniper Vasili Zaitsev.

Siberian sniper Zaitsev only killed 225 soldiers and officers of the Wehrmacht and other Axis armies, including 11 enemy snipers between 10 November 1942 and 17 December 1943, during the Battle of Stalingrad.

I liked that movie.  Saw it several years ago; and then watched it again with Ochka a few months ago.

Of course, I appreciated it when the lead gal got in sleeping bag with Zaitsev to provide him with relief.
A beautiful woman is pleasant to look at, but it is easier to live with a pleasant acting one.

The lead gal, Rachel Weisz, is David Craig's - the most recent James Bond - wife.

There is a memorial to Zaitsev - the Hare - on the hill (Mamayev Kurgan) where the statue commemorating the siege of 'Stalingrad' (Volgograd) overlooks the city.

The Panoram museum is well worth a visit.
