Bombs, Terrorism, and Tver?
« on: July 03, 2006, 01:32:41 PM »
I've been hearing some interesting news from Tver.  Maybe our 'Man on the street' there might have some more info?

My wife, speaking yesterday/today with two people in Tver, has heard of two separate incidents.

First happened in the large rinook (open market) that is across the river bridge from the Olympic shopping mall.  A family friend (whom my wife spoke with) witnessed the event.  A man, described as "dressed like a bum", was detained by police, while a package and a bottle (similar to a Molotov cocktail) was lying on the ground nearby.  Police were frantically trying to get the onlookers and gawkers to leave the area, proclaiming that it was an explosive device.

The second event was related by the wife of a businessman whom are good friends of the family.  A bomb was found in a video store located on the ground floor in the building which they live.

In both cases, the people relating the story indicated that terrorism may be involved in these incidents.

I am not sure what to think.  I try not to jump to rash conclusions, so anyone with more real information, pl;ease add it here.

Hey Conner--- very interested in your thread... is there an update of any sorts from your wife?

I search pravda and MosNews and found nothing about either of these incidents.

I'll ask around at the chat-room at tvernet to see if someone knows something.

Thanks for posting this! :)

No, I haven't heard any more about it.  I'm not one to jump to conclusions.  It could as likely been misunderstanding, gossip, and just locally disgruntled people in the city.  But I knew a few English speaking people here have contacts in Tver, so I was just putting my ear to the ground.

While I don't know anything about these incidents there have been occasions in the past where bombings have been carried out as a business tactic in both Ukraine and Russia.

That was my first thought regarding the video store.  Maybe a mafia type move, but there is also quite a few Chechens living in Tver too.
