DaveNY,

It's already post evening meal cocktails - but even after imbibing 1 Cider, I note your very own stats demonstrate that the US is FAR more dangerous than Russia ? !

Since you don't say why and as usual you don't list any stats I don't see how the US is more dangerous?

No unhappiness.  I had a happy childhood, surrounded by people who loved me and who I loved.  The better half called me a "greenhouse baby".   This was my path.
After the fall of communism, the biggest mistake Boris Yeltsin's regime made was not to disband the KGB altogether. Instead it changed its name to the FSB and, to many observers, morphed into a gangster organisation, eventually headed by master criminal Vladimir Putin. - Gerard Batten

Boethius the women in your family were lucky if none of them experienced DV. I was in Russia 6 years and heard of DV from a number of women. IMO the reason it isn't more well known, in Russia at least, is because it doesn't make the news to the same degree it does in the US.

DV is very prevalent in the US as well.  Half of all women murdered in the US are murdered by partners in DV cases.

Quote
My understanding is that there are far fewer stats keep on DV in Russia than on DV in the US, Canada, UK, etc. Don't know about Ukraine. From what I've read from foreign sources DV kills thousands of women each year in Russia. A Wikipedia source confirms this.

The attitude toward DV is different.  Moreover, because people there live more cheek to jowl, it can't be hidden.  I don't think it is more prevalent in Russia or Ukraine than in the West.  It's just that the attitude is different.  Men more often than not are not arrested in the FSU if a call is a DV case.  I don't know about various states, but where I live, a perpetrator will be charged wither or not the victim of DV wants the charges.  Furthermore, there are as many men who are victims as there are women.  Men still do tend to hide it more.

Quote
Another myth about Russia is that because Putin rules with an iron fist Russia has a low crime rate. After all stories about murder and other criminal activity don't make the news to nearly to the same degree as in the US.

Rape is far less prevalent there.

There has always been a criminal element in the FSU.  We had a neighbour who was one of the "top ten" criminals in all the USSR.  Everyone was happy when he got out of jail, because the alcoholics who harassed people (including children) for money disappeared.

Quote
This is total BS. Russia has a murder rate far higher than in the US. There are almost as many murders in Russia, population 140 million, as in the US, population 330 million. According to the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime the homicide rate in Russia was 10.82 per 100,000 inhabitants (2016) while in the US the homicide rate was 5.35 per 100,000 inhabitants (2016). Big difference.

Anywhere with high addiction rates, particularly alcohol, will have high homicide rates.

The US homicide rate is still far higher than Canada, or Western Europe.  That's probably a fairer comparison, as economic factors, education, etc., are closer.

BS... You must have been drinking, when you 'responded' ..;)

YOU posted the 'stats' ... I merely pointed out that they demonstrated you were wrong

Your 'own' stats show the US has a higher murder by gun rate than Russia, EU nations, etc.,

WHY are you in 'denial' ?

I suspect that the United States has a higher percentage of the population suffering from PTSD. There is the reality for a number of reasons  PTSD is under reported in Russia and for that matter Ukraine. Society there deals with these mental health issues in different ways than the West.

No they don't. Post the exact stat that shows I'm wrong or be quiet.

Edit: A few hours later and nothing from msmob. I think most of his posts are BS.

“Society there deals with these mental health issues in different ways than the West.”

Vodka Therapy is the most common treatment for mental health issues in Russland
in America we put mentally ill people in prison, because it’s the only place we have for them
or we pick one and make him our leader
kinda wanta go with the Vodka therapy on this one
but just in a more dignified way than being passed out in a pool of your own urine
in front of your apartment building which is the most common form in Russland

from my own experience of having PTSD while living in Crimea
the output amplitude of PTSD is proportional to the input S(tress)
people in Russland have WAY more stress, WAY MORE
it sucks being an average Ivan in Russland
or even a rich American
it's why I no longer live there
I'd rather live in a trailer park full of ex-cons next to a garbage dump in Alabama
then live in Russia
