old subject..calling cards
« on: October 21, 2006, 08:00:11 AM »
I know this is an old subject but need a few new recommendations. We've used Pingo calling card for a long time but recently connections have been sporadic and frustrating. I can't hook up to vonage or any broadband service because of my location. I'm stuck with using calling cards. sometimes we call home/residential and sometimes we call mom and pops cell. Their service is Jeans. Maybe out of Kiev. So here I am asking an old question. What calling cards have you been using to call Ukr? I know the service isn't great there but my wife wants to try another card. thanks.

I have used bestandsmart.pushline.com to compare several cards.  I call Russia and use the continental card.  I think it costs more to call Ukraine.  I found that buying the cards and refilling them before each call has been the cheapest, we usually talk until the card expires on each call because some cards have a "connect fee" or a weekly maintenance fee.  Sometimes these can be avoided by talking till the card time runs out.  Just my 2.9 cents per/min 8)
If your not the lead dog, the view never changes.

Stay away from cards with connection charges and/or maintenance fees.  Once you add those in to your costs, an apparent low cents per minute price begins to climb quickly.

When I was using cards, I found the products from http://www.ldpost.com were pretty good and well priced to Russia (don't know about Ukraine).  The EuroMama card had a good price, no hidden fees, and an 800# access (you save about 1 cent/min if you call their NYC access number).

Now we use VoIP exclusively, and utilize the free Betamax/Finarea 'free' service to Russia (~8.5 cent/min to Ukraine).

I also used to use Pingo to call Ukraine and experienced the periods of poor connections you mentioned.  Most of the time it was great and them a few weeks of dropped calls, echoes, etc..

Anyway, as a backup I would use Iconnecthere.com .  It is a similar type of service as pingo and cost maybe one cent a minute more.  Between the two of them it seems like I could almost always get a decent connection

Keep checking  http://www.futurephone.com/  , they keep adding countries you can call for free if you have a broadband phone or free L/D on your cell phone.  They recently added Mexico, Taiwan, China, and Hong Kong to the list of over 50 countries to the free list.  Ukraine isn't on the list yet, thankfully Russia is.

I have had a lot of success with ExpressPin calling cards: http://pointme.to/expresspin They have a variety of cards from different carriers.  Never had a bad experience with them yet.

I agree that http://www.LDPOST.com's prepaid calling services are the best: try their Peanuts Long Distance prepaid calling service that you get right online (http://www.peanuts-ld.com) -- no maintenance fees, rechargeable, auto refill option. Best of all: they now have a local access number in Dnepropetrovsk as well as all over CIS. When traveling, be sure to get a toll-free access number off of their number finder at http://www.ldpost.com/webstore/local.php and you can call back to the U.S. no prob. If your lady happens to still be there, she can call you using that local access number. I keep in touch with my girl that way. You can view call history online to keep tabs. I like this because this lets the girl call you too, which makes me feel like I'm not the one who's always calling her but that she wants to talk to me too. We enjoy chatting and planning our next rendezvous every single day.
