Power converter/transformers
« on: March 29, 2005, 02:53:26 PM »
Hi folks,

I'm planning to bring a cell phone and rechargeble mp3 player with me when I travel to Dnepro in April.

Can anyone tell me what I'll need in terms of converters/transformers in order to use my US electronic devices?

European 220 converter available at most travel stores here in the US.  Besure to get the extension piece that goes on the plug end as many of the outlets are recessed and your converter won't be very useful.

Something with a better than a 300 watt capability.  Closer to 500 watts would be better.  Running a 1200 watt hair dryer is out of the question with these small wattage converters.  All you will get is a small puff of smoke if you overload the converter, and once you let the smoke out they are toast.

Check the power blocks of the items you are taking.  Many nowdays are 110-220 volt universal type power supplies. If so you only need a simple plug adapter.

lol jb!~ sounds like some smoking experiences in your past:D

Lugging around a 500 watt 25 pound converter is a bit impractical tho'  better just to buy a hairdryer there.. if you have any left:shock:

Always wondered what was inside them things, smoke, Thanks JB.:)

groovlstk if all your using is your cell phone you don't need a huge converter. I've been here 2 years & am still using the little 50w Radio Shack model I bought 3 years ago. Runs my getto blaster without any problem.

But as BC pointed out, if your cord has a power block on it you may not require one, just a plug adapter. Those are cheap here at only 5 rouble & I use those for my laptop, camera recharging & my video camera as they all have power blocks.

Definitely buy it prior to leaving.  I found them very hard to find and acquire in Minsk.  Perhaps, it was just hard to explain what was needed as my Russian is limited to a few choice terms of endearments, etc.
