Someone sent me a PM asking for this and I thought it might be helpful to others who's wives are learning or will start soon:

States that have driver's manuals online in Russian:

Iowa: http://www.iamvd.com/ods/studyguides/russian.pdf

California: http://www.dmv.ca.gov/pubs/foreign_hdbk/dl600R.pdf

Even here in Sioux Falls, there are a few Russian speaking instructors, both in class and behind the wheel.

Have any of you ever began with a golf cart, to let her learn steering?
This is something we learn almost naturally.... We have sat in the front seat of a car, and a certain amount of it just happens.  They ride in the bus or walk, and driving is not a part of the daily experiences.

Try to think of an office where most are older citizens taking the test....Hopefully it will work for you and her....

When our lady took her test....the guy told her she could park anywhere she wanted.....they walked nearly a block back to the office...

Guess that learned him... darn it.  She passed with flying colors!
May those that love us, love us.
And those that don't love us,May God turn their hearts.
And if He doesn't turn their hearts,May He turn their ankles,
So we will know them by their limping.

God put your arm about my shoulder... and your hand over my MOUTH!

A somewhat related item to the subject --

Yesterday, we went to DMV to get my wife's licence renewed.  They had made her licence expire on the day that her Cond. Resident Alien card expired (which is this state's policy).  This is to keep only people without legal status from having a DL.

Well, we have filed for her permenant GC (10 year), but have not received it yet.  Armed with her NOA, we headed to DMV.  We made our game plan ahead of time -- tell them we wish to renew the driver's licence.  On the form, it asks if you are a US citizen.  When the man behind the window asked, she replied, "No, I am a Resident Alien."

The guy asked for her GC (which is her old one, with an expiration date of next week).  He pushed some buttons, shuffled some papers, and asked:

"Would you like to renew for two years, or four?"

We opted for the 4 year renewal, got her licence, and left.    8)

That was a good heads-up. My wife got hers before her GC so when I saw this, we pulled out her DL and it's good till 2011. Whew!! Won't have to worry about for awhile. I remember she used the Wa. state russian version of the drivers booklet to supplement what she didn't understand.

My wife is just about ready to take the driving test. I think she'll pass but she cant parallel park quite yet. It would be nice if she got her DL before her mom arrived!

We have sleet and snow and icy roads here in Texas.  So I gave Vik another driving lesson...today she looked normal....just like all the other drivers sliding around!!!  ;D  LOL
The greater danger for most of us lies not in setting our aim too high and falling short; but in setting our aim too low, and achieving our mark.  michelangelo

Dunno about your state Dave, but here in FL she wasn't even required to parallel park for her test (she was sweating that one big time!). The FL test seems to have gotten much easier since I took it in the mid '80s
