Internet Assistance - Sort of like Eng lessons!
« on: June 15, 2007, 09:28:11 AM »
Folks,

I enjoyed the thread from carraig concerning English lessons.  I learned quite a bit that will only help me in the near future.  I would like to extend this question a little further.  Internet assistance.  We all know how easy it is for us in the U.S., work - home - wi-fi - GPRS - whatever, we are connected from T-spans to dial-up and the list is endless.  I think my RW needs some help here.  I don't get the quality due to the quantity or lack thereof.  She buys a card or something and it's not tied to her phone line from what I understand.  I don't know this technology.  I wish to purchase her some online time.  What can I expect?

Thanks,
mm

Here's my experience with internet service in Ukraine:  When I first arrived, I would use a dial up service.  This involved purchasing a card from one of various providers that allowed a certain amount of internet time.  When the time ran out I would purchase another.  That's probably the service your RW is referring to.  It's common because it requires no up front expense other than a phone line.  When we built our apartment, we looked at having satellite internet so my wife had cables run to every room in the apartment and a line up to the roof of the apartment building in anticipation of installing a satellite dish.  The charge for this would have been about $450 for the dish and $50 a month for up to 800 megabytes of download.  We also looked at WiFi but the charges were even worse and the reception was not so hot, even though we were downtown.  In the past six months there has been a big growth in cable internet services.  We had cable TV and internet run to our apartment for about $100, which included purchasing the required modem.  We pay $10 a month for both our cable TV and essentially unlimited internet service.

Depending on where your GF lives, you have two options.  Either pay for the internet dial up cards as needed or pay more upfront to install a system in her apartment and then a relatively low monthly fee after that.
