I have been communicating with a lady from the Ukraine for a while now. I have received a telephone number to contact her but cannot seem to get through on the number provided. Is there anyone that can help?

If you want her checked out contact Dema at Scam Chek. He'll tell you if its real or not, but my experience tells me you hooked a scammer!

If it's a mobile, could either be off or out of range.  Does it ring? message in English?

You may be having problems with the international or city code.  If you want to send me the number in a PM I can maybe decipher it for you and help you out.  If her phone is off or out of range you will usually get a message both in Russian and in English saying that the subscriber is not available.

I reject Rvrwind's advice to run as being premature and without sufficient information.  If you want to provide us with more information we can help you with knowing if you are on the right track with this woman.  I hope so, as if you find a good Ukrainian woman, life is very good.

The number does not ring, however I get a message in russian, what the message says I have no idea. If i change the number and dial it as if I would dial an international number anywhere else by dropping the zero, I get through, but a russian gentleman always answers and I have no way to understand him. I have been speaking to this lady for a very long time, and I really want to meet her.

Reject it if you wish but BTDT. I've had several scammers talk to guys on the phone. Not until we are asked to step in & verify the address & phone # after the money question is the truth known. Scammers are getting smarter & bolder but I havn't seen one have the nerve to show up at my office & pick up the money yet.

There can always be problems with phones in Ukraine or Russia.

Can you send texts?
Maybe she sent you the wrong number or you got the wrong one on your phone memory?
If it is a landline the you would dial + 380 city code and then the number
For mobile you dial + 380 the number without the zero at the beginning.

BTW I recently read the story of a traveler to Kiev who decided to contact the local agency. The charged him $40 to arrange a date with the girl he chose. The girl asked him $100 for and hour and 200 for two hours.
So going through a local marriage agency is no guarantee either.

When calling my wife's mobile number in Ukraine from the US I dial 011 380 and then the two digit code of the mobile company, which for UMC is 50, and then the 7 digit number of her mobile.

Here is another wacky possibility, but I did witness this in Kharkov.. I know most everyone has a mobile phone, however, I did meet some young ladies who were students who each had a sim card, but they shared a common phone.  They shared a place together and this was their phone, but each of them had their own number this way.  Strange but true.  The lady I was with just summed it up as "Hungry students".

Another lady I met there did the same thin with a phone provided by her work.. she swapped sim cards after hours so she could have her own number but use the nice work phone.

While this is probably rare, I wanted to mention it along with some of the other possibilities mentioned above to emphasize that a phone problem is not necessarily an immediate flag of death.

Send her a couple of SMS messages and see if/when she responds. A text message can catch up to her when she's back in range, turns the phone on, switches sim cards, etc.

And that was a "marriage agency"??? I wonder what "escort agencies" charge, then, since the girl's "fee" was within hooker range .

I better personally investigate this... to make sure no one falls prey to something so diabolical.. um, Mir.. you have that number handy???
