US Passport Expiration & the K-1 (or K-3) process
« on: June 08, 2008, 02:47:41 PM »
Maybe this is a stupid question but it doesn't hurt to check. In the near future I will most likely be submitting a K-1 petition for my fiancee. Does it matter if I will need to renew my own passport during the time between first submission and embassy interview? My passport will expire in July 2009 and since I will want to attend the embassy interview this means I will most likely need to have my passport renewed in between visits to see my fiancee. I have not filled out the paperwork yet but did skim the I-129F & G-325A and did not see anywhere my passport needs to be involved so maybe it does not matter.

And the rest of that question would be what about the passport stamps from visiting the Ukraine? If I scan that information and print out a color copy is that going to be sufficient for part of the evidence of having met?

The passport copy is used only to verify your US citizenship at the beginning of the application process, so after that, the process of securing a new one shouldn't interfer.  The interview is about her worthiness to immigrate and not so much your eligibility which would have already been cleared other than the Affidavit of support which she must take with her to the interview.

Photocopies of the passport stamps should be fine for the evidence of meeting.  Unless something looks very unusual to them, I can't imagine them asking for the original.

Thanks Scott.

This is the first time I have had to renew my passport...When you renew it does your passport number change? Would that impact any need to have the same passport number when I submit the petition as when they might actually check it?
