Ukraine phone
« on: June 04, 2005, 07:18:39 AM »
I know of many people now experiencing problems phoning Ukraine.

I have been getting a lot of disconnects with a sound that is like an air raid siren. Very often we will speak for a few minutes and this will happen. It is a dreadful sound.

Since virtually everyone in Ukraine has a mobile phone, I often receive the infamous message "the subscribor cannot be reached at the moment" when her phone is shut off or she runs out of minutes.

Do most people pay for minutes and not pay a monthly service fee?

I have never experienced a more terrible telephone system. It was probably never set up for us guys, only for local calling.

I had to rant about this, the phone system sucks.

The Ukraine phone system is like the weather, everyone complains about it but nothing can (or will) be done to change it.

The impression I have Son of Clyde is that most of them buy the phone cards that are for sale everywhere and use those rather than a montly fee.

I also used all those phone cards. Last month I switched to Vonage, and haven't had a bad call since. It costs a little more per minute $0.16/min  to a mobile phone, but for crystal clear connection, it is worth it.

I called her at 3:30 am and the reception was crystal clear.

The lines are going to be busy on weekends.

Do we call them "lines" or "cells"?

When I phone Moscow at 12 pm est the reception is great so there is much to be desired in the Ukraine system.
