It's time to go
« on: October 29, 2007, 03:24:58 PM »
Hi Everyone...

Some of you may remember from my few posts that i have been talking with a very nice but also very "low key" lady from Kazakhstan for almost 2 years now... well i finally decided it's time to just get on a plane and go... so i asked her and i have to say, she is "Very Pleased" and so am I..

the surprise came when she suggested one potential meeting place that was rather close to her hometown but not what you would consider a spectacular holiday destination in January... So i asked if we were to meet there how difficult would it be to travel to her home town if we both decided that was appropriate, and when i did her reaction went from "very pleased" to something well beyond that.. :D

I think that one brief exchange, has said more to each of us than most of what we have discussed over the past 2 years....

So right now I'm a very happy guy, but lots to do... wish me luck...

Sounds like you two are almost as bad as mine and I were. We took forever to follow through this process. My advice is to "Hope for the best and expect the worst" then you won't be disappointed and don't try to change the pace of things now. There is no certainties in this game, but time is the best friend for both people involved IMO.

All the best.

Don't make your move too fast. You may crash and burn. Take your time. For those who don't understand, I'm joking. Dizzy, get your butt over there and quit torturing the woman! Have fun on your trip. Are you going to Almaty?
Fund the audits, spread the word and educate people, write your politicians and other elected officials. Stay active in the fight to save our country. Over 220 generals and admirals say we are in a fight for our survival like no other time since 1776.

Thanks I/O.. It's comforting to know i'm not the only "slow starter" here... ;) and as far as the expectations are concerned i think that is very good advice, i will do my best to expect nothing, just go and be myself, with the hope that if nothing else i will have the experience of a life time emersing myself in a very different and very interesting culture.. and as a minimum meet someone who could be at least, a good friend.. with luck it may turn out to be much more, only time will tell..

Thanks Bill... when i mentioned the 2 year thing I new i was going to "wear it" from someone.. and you may just be the first of many... ;)  we had first talked about Almaty but my incoming flight goes through Astana which is much closer to where she lives, so she suggested maybe we could meet there... we have discussed it and she does not particularly like the city,, ( not much character compared to Almaty ) but is quite close to where she lives,, and i believe she must be thinking that things will go well between us and if they do we can just jump in her car and go "meet the Family" so to speak.. ;)  Yikes...! no pressure there eh? being under the eye, of an extended family and friends, with which i do not speak a common language.. ;D..
we have both agreed that where we meet is not the focus anyway...  the final plans have not been made yet but so far all is good...  the best part is that if it goes as planned I will be there on her birthday and also the second anniversary of my first letter to her... I know.. I know... "get on the plane".. ;)

Dizzy, if you do meet the family, I'm sure they will warmly welcome you. Bring gifts, preferably made in Canada where you live, for the lady and family just in case you meet them. Also you should think about bringing a book of Canada's best scenery. I'm sure your lady and family will be interested in looking at the book. Before I went to visit my fiancee in Uzbekistan, I was searching for photos of Uzbekistan on the internet to satisfy my curiosity on what it looked like.

I hope you have time to write a trip report, Dizzy.  I will be very interested to read it.  I was a Write One Visit One since I began this adventure back in 2001 and I don't want to advise you much because I think it would get in the way of your experience.  One idea I would like to impart on you is that first impressions are important, but try to reserve judgment for a few days regardless of how well or how poorly things are going.

Good luck to you!

I hope everything will be successful for you DizzyD :) the main thing you should not expect something like a fairy tale and everything will be how you want it to be :)
The other good thing that you finally decided to go and meet a person you've been corresponding for about 2 years so it is really about the time to meet up:)

Be careful and hope that it will be a nice trip :)
