Ahhh.. and now I am supposed to debate you on this ?

Absolutely not.  I think you should go with the most positive attitude possible.  However, I also think you should go with your eyes wide open.  It's wayyyyy too easy to get swept up in fantasy, just do as was suggested up thread by the shadowman, use your alone time to do a mental critique of the events of the day.

Moscow is a great city with lots to see.  Everyone who visits Moscow should come home with a photograph of Red Square, as mentioned, the Diamond Fund is a must see, I would add to that the Armory, and a few of the more famous and historical churches.  The Russians are justifiable proud of the restoration work done on these, they were sorely neglected for about 70 years.

Good luck.

A couple of links for Moscow views:

http://www.123-cams.com/live-webcam.php?var=1528&site=http://www.wdr.de/online/eiszeit/webcam.phtml

The first is, (I think) from Sparrow Hill looking up at Moscow State University, the second is a view of the Kremlin.

On top of the other advice here, I really suggest meeting more than one lady on this trip.  You need to meet more than one before you have any clue what you are dealing with.

Sage advice.

There are far too many men who fall for the first FSU woman they meet.  Especially on a first trip, you are going to go into sensory overload.  Expect to come home with whiplash from your neck snapping right and left trying to look at all the women, each more beautiful than the one before.

Like humans everywhere, each one will have their own quirks and eccentricities.  Take your time.  You are taking the first step of a very long process and the path, though well trod is fraught with pitfalls, traps, and hazards.  Get in too big of a hurry and things will get very bad very quickly.

jb- It's cool.. eyes open

Acrzybear - I read about your trip. In my view a success regardless... I would have done everything the same as you did, so I don't take your experience as a warning.. because I am similarly minded. You are correct in that there may not be a chemistry in person, but that is what the trip is for, to find out.

DKMM /Phil dAmore- This is my first trip to Russia.. and I am sure there will be sensory overload.. as my nick suggests, I was also in Lithuania once.. whole different ball of wax I'm sure... although I can juggle 3 cans of peas.. I am just not that way with women.. even when doing the corresponding thing I am pretty much one at a time.. they get the full attention and their shot (sometimes its me getting the shot) and it plays out. This particular woman is special enough to have put me where I'm at now. She will get my full attention.. If it doesn't turn out to be, it doesn't., and I'll get to check out Moscow TV... I know the perils of this as I lived it once before... Even with chemistry.. you can both be crazy about each other, but to convince one or the other to move 5000 miles from everything and everyone they know is tough.. believe me I know.

Even if the quality of water in Moscow is improved I would definitely NOT take the chance.
I drink bottled water in much of Western Europe as well. You can put me on the totally paranoid
list. I once caught salmonella (you don't get it from water) and was sick for nearly 3 weeks and
lost close to 30 pounds. Now I watch everything If you had an experience like that even once you
will definitely would do anything not to relive it.

Imagine, you spend thousands of dollars and valuable vacation time to meet the potential love of your
life and instead you are staying in your (jail cell like) room afraid to sneeze to avoid crapping your pants.
The pain, the aggravation, the discomfort, the missed opportunities can all be avoided by spending maybe
$20.00 on bottled water? I say it's the cheapest insurance that you can get.

Just my two kopecks,

2tall-

I will definitely get some bottled water.. but even here you have to question the source of it.. For example, we give out complimentary bottles of water where I work.. If you examine them you will find out that it's bottled in Irvine Ca.. I've been to Irvine.. and even though Miller beer has a bottling company there, it doesn't strike me as a place to obtain pure healthy drinking water... There's nothing wrong with it of course, but I am sure most tap waters through out the US would compare well with it.

I've found the best method for tap water is a 2 stage filter.. first boil the water and then strain it through some dark beans and a paper filter..  This changes the color though, and you will have know way of knowing what the water color really is.. however a little cream and sugar to taste.. and ignorance is bliss they say.

But really, I will get some bottled water.

The bulk of the bottled water is produced and provided by the local  bottlers of Coca-Cola & Pepsi Cola, sold under the names Aqua Fina and Aqua Mineral.  Who makes what escapes me right now but it really doesn't matter because it's water!

It's kinda like liposuction from the inside using sand paper and grenades over a period of 3 weeks without the pain medication. I should start a marketing plan for it.

When travelling to the FSU I highly recommend every guy bring a bottle of

Amoxicillin plus dosing regime (antibiotic that usually works)
Flagyl (Metronidazole) and Lomotil - plus dosing regime.  Flagyl will kill your giardia and other flagellate organisms you may run into and lomotil will keep the Wild Bill's stomped up so they can get off the toilet seat and deal with the world so your vacation is not ruined.

The water is better (well at least the cold water is) than it used to be. I still don't drink it from the tap, but have been rinsing and washing my fruit and veggies with it for quite awhile. No problems.

Another brand by Coca Cola is Bon Aqua, which is what I drink. Again, as Phil pointed out, just make sure you let the clerk know you want it without carbonation ( voda bez gasa in Russian), otherwise they will normally give it to you with gas.

lets keep some things in perspective. He's only going to be here 6 days, so he doesn't need to bring all these things because most likely he won't be affected. Lets at least use common sense and stop all the paranoia about the water. Yes I agree, don't drink from the tap, but talking about salmonella in relation to drinking water and bringing
all these medications to Moscow...please.

They have all the medications you need here, should you need them (immodium for instance). When I look at some of the lists on what to bring its just amazing to me...so outdated.

To the OP, just come to Moscow, and get a taste of what its like in Russia. Pack light and leave the paranoia at home. Good luck.

2tall,

Great diet plan! I can relate to that. Caught e coli a few years ago from food I ate in Ukraine. Didn't lose 30 lbs, but never had much of a chance to weigh myself.  If they only had a scale on the commode, I could have seen my weight drop by the sitting.

I spent a few (5 or 6) nights in Moscow last year.  Matter of fact had dinner with Chivo and RVRwind.

Here is where I stayed:

http://www.moscow-hotels.net/izmailovo-gamma-delta-hotel/

http://www.hotelizmailovo.ru/eng/go.html

They have a bar, restaurants, and an Internet Cafe on premises.

Price was about $100 or $120 per night - not bad in Moscow.  You cannot book a room directly with the hotel if I remember correctly.  You need to go through a booking agent.  Not sure of rules today.

If you need a ride from the airport to the hotel I have a driver with a lada that you can call.  PM me and I will give you his number.  He charged me like 500 rubles for the airport hotel ride.  He also drove me and my wife around for a day at a cost of about 1000 or 1500 rubles.  I forget but it was very affordable.  I have his name and number here.

Water:  Bottled of course.  Not even a discussion.  Always bottled when you travel anywhere.  I drink only bottled when traveling in USA.  Tap at home as my body is used to it.

Survival tools on Bill's list can be taken or left at your discretion.  Everything is available in Moscow.

Walking shoes - take BROKEN IN walking shoes!  Me and my wife BOTH had (many painful) blisters on our feet because of all the walking.  - And she's russian and was used to a lot of walking.  Your woman WILL look at your shoes when you first meet...  so wear nice shoes for the initial meeting and then change when you start to do some walking.  Trust me on this one.  :)  One thing my wife remembers most from our first meeting was my "Yellow shoes" as she calls them - referring to my timberland boots.  (Not in fashion in Russia)  If you're wondering what color shoes to wear there is ONLY one answer.  Black.

The hotel I recommend above is very close to a metro entrance - so you're OK to get anywhere in town within 15-25 minutes.

Other than that...  you will have an experience with whiplash in most any part of Russia.  So be prepared and enjoy!

- Maxxum
