Bob: I suggest you go to the FAQ section and read it through a couple of times. It was put together by and large with people who have real experience right through this process. It is a good solid, basic resource that will start you on the right track.

 I'll second that reading of the FAQ section. Then on to the Trip Reports as they would give you a good feel for how it really is when you've got your feet on the ground in the FSU. Pay particular attention to Groovlstk's reports and Kuna put together a great one as well.
