Goofy Windows stuff
« on: January 04, 2008, 09:04:47 AM »
I have noticed if I create a blank text message in Windows, name and save it to the desktop, I will have my saved text message with the name I assigned it and a blank text message. Why is the blank one still there? Shouldn't the named text message overwrite it?

Remote autopsies are always a nightmare, the corpse is always giving conflicting/incomplete information ;).

I have noticed if I create a blank text message in Windows,
and what ? Notepad, Word ? Or something else, since you call it a "message" ?

WAD so far, I'd say.

and a blank text message.
Where does this come from ?

Did you get a warning about overwriting ?

Let me see if I get what you're doing:
1. You save a blank (empty) file to the desktop with a given name.
2. You then create another file, this time with some text, and save it to the desktop with the SAME name you used for the empty file.
3. Now you can see both files on the desktop ? Having exactly the same name ::)?

No Sandro, Right click, new, text message, save as, I give it a name and when I close it the newly named text message is on the desktop and also on the desktop is the original blank text message. Why is there two?

When you use right click, if I remember correctly, the new text document will actually immediately create and SAVE the file as New Document.txt or whatever the default is...  then you must open the document to edit it.. so it's just like opening any other document, if you save any previously saved document with a new filename, you will have both the original and the newly named copy. You will have two documents.  Why? It's the windows default behavior.. I know you can change the behavior of the right click, but I can't remember where.. it may be an undocumented hack.

When you did the "save as", you created a copy - thus 2.

Try this:  Right Click, new, text document(message).  Press enter.  Left click on the new file to select it, then right click and rename it.  (make sure you keep the file extension on the file or you won't be able to open it.)  Now, double click on the file, make your changes and save/close.  Wella...  Only one file on the desktop.

Thank you it works now. I never realized the file is highlighted ready to be renamed. I am used to right clicking and renaming it without being prompted to do so. I was creating an extra file by renaming it myself.
