Zdravstvuite Everyone
« on: February 03, 2008, 02:27:08 PM »
    I'm glad that websites like this exist because it makes the process of foreign relationships more understandable and definately possible to achieve. As a novice I hope to learn as much as I can from RWD and its members. I know the journey is long and arduous, but in the end it'll be well worth the effort.

Well - to answer your question.  But let me warn you as one under discipline, they don't like untranslated Russian phrases so better stick to English here.

And by the way, thanks for asking.

Christian  :)

Married a Ukrianian woman I met in the States. Divorced then wrote a lady in Russia and had a short relationship with her and then I wrote many women just to find this gem whom I'm in the k-1 stage with currently in a thread I wrote here:

why is that?!  ::)
zdravstvuite isn't too formal at all.
I use it more often than privet(hi) which is used only with friends/very close people.Every time I meet a colleague(even of my age or younger)/partner/neighbour/aunts/uncles, etc I use zdravstvui(te)

First, welcome Raikov!

Second, I agree with Serebro, I've heard it on the street and used it often. I've also heard zdravstvui and even zdravst depending on how much of a hurry the person speaking it is in. Now on the other hand, use of gospadin (Mr.) or gaspazha (Mrs.) will get people to laugh out loud  ;)

    Thanks for the welcome jet. In the beginning I was going to use "privet" but I decided to go with something different for a change. So "zdravstvuite" was my final decision. My Russian is limited, but I'm trying to expand my knowledge of this language whenever I can. I was thinking about purchasing the Rosetta Stone language program to get the basics down first. It's fun and interesting to practice a foreign language especially with someone who is a native of that tongue. In the future I'd much rather depend on myself than a translator to communicate with any FSU women.

I've never heard it from anybody unless I said it to them first.  But I don't greet strangers in the street (when in Rome...), its always been friends or friends of friends so my experience may be limited.  I used to say Zdravo all the time because that's the serbian word and I learned it before Russian.

Anyways, Raikov I hate to say this but I tried Rosetta stone to brush up and it was quite useless.  Your best bet is to take a class of some sort if you have that option.  Or even Pimsleur (sp).  The only line I put together from Rosetta was "kakaya ptitsa plavit?  [wait to see if she answers] UUTKA!"  This phrase has always gotten the girls to laugh (need some ducks nearby though or you might sound silly).

Serebro,
жаль что они плохого сделали тебе? пока всего тебе хорошего.

  Thanks for the info DKMM. Yes, I've heard about the Pimsleur language programs. Your russian phrase sounds pretty funny so I don't blame the ladies for laughing. What does it mean though? (kakaya ptitsa plavit? UUTKA!) There are plenty of ducks and geese where I live so finding them wont be a problem. On the other hand finding a FSUW or a russian-speaking girl here can be difficult  :-\
