No visa required in the Ukraine?
« on: July 25, 2005, 07:40:28 AM »
Hello everyone,

I just heard from a friend of mine in Kherson who told me that tourist visas are no longer required. I checked alittle, but it seems that you do have to pay for the first trip. The second is free. Anyone know for sure, and has tried getting there without one? Lawman

No visa required in the Ukraine?

lawman I had sent a request today to the Ukraine Embassy trying to get a definite answer.

As I saw the first decree it was good for a second visit if that visit was within 6 months, but your right, you had to get the first visa for the second entry to be valid.

This was, or is, posted on the US Embassy in Ukraine website,...

A passport valid for six months beyond the planned date of travel is required. According to Ukrainian Presidential Decree #1008 dated June 30, 2005, U.S. citizens traveling to Ukraine on short-term tourist, business or private travel do not need a visa to enter Ukraine.

Short-term travelers entering Ukraine under the auspices of the June 30 decree can stay in Ukraine up to 90 days during a six-month period beginning with the date of their initial entry.

The way i interpret the US embassy description is that a prior visit is not needed. It only states that one can stay up to 90 day in a 6 month period, begining with first visit. So if first visit was 30 days, then if the person wishes to visit again, that person could only stay 60 days (90 total) during that 6 month period from beginning of first trip.  After that 6 month period,  the 90 day limit would once again be in effect for the following 6 months. This is valid for private, business, tourist and sport visas.

I applied for a visa just yersterday. We will see if they grant visa, or send back passport with letter saying visa is not needed and also they give me my money back.

I have not received an official reply back but have exchanged e-mails with an American guy who went to Ukraine with NO visa, was allowed to enter, no problem.

So that's that. NO VISA required to enter Ukraine for American's at this time.

Ha!  Of course they will take your money and give you a visa.  :)

But I still think it is not needed.  A marriage agency in Ukraine confirmed that for me, too...

Not necesarily. I have read on other forums since this post, that they are returning  passports without visas, and returning the money order.

Still confused.

The Ukraine Embassy this morning told Iva with Russia House that our client who has never been to Ukraine before has to have a visa. This is different information than what another guy wrote who said he had never been to Ukraine before and he went in July without a visa and had no problem.

The client today said he can't take the chance and is proceeding with getting a visa. I guess, and hope, if he does not need one the Ukraine Embassy will send the passport and money back as well.

I just recieved my passport back from Ukrainian consulate in Chicago. No visa was required. They also sent back the money order that I included. The last time i was there was 7 months ago, so the discussion about having been there prior to 6 months ago also does not apply. I have attached letter that consulate sent back with my passport. So at least with Chicago consulate, it does not apply. I wonder if the Ukrainian embassy thought Iva was talking about a client who was not American. They will send the money back if visa is not needed. I sent my passport like the client did, just to make sure. Better safe than sorry.

I wrote the Ukrainian embassy to also get clarification. Here is what they sent me today:

"Dear applicant,
visa is not required if you can enter Ukraine during 6 months and if your
stay in Ukraine doesnt acceed 90 days.
Sincerely Yours,
Consular Office"

How poor of an english translation is that? Makes no sense. What 6 months are they talking about? Try figuring out exactly what "visa is not required if you can enter Ukraine during 6 months " means!
