Still some communist remains in Kharkov...
« on: February 28, 2008, 11:13:34 AM »
When I stayed in Kharkov this time so took I a lot of photos from the city. It was photos from museums, the city center, photos of funny places to see and so on. I walked around in the city to shoot picks :).

Several times before have I noticed that there are several marks and monuments from the communist time in Kharkov. Most peoples living in eastern Ukraine are Russian peoples or Russian/Ukrainians. They talk Russian and few speaks Ukrainian. Janukovits party have most of his voters from Eastern Ukraine. I guess they feel closer to the Sovjetunion times than the western Ukrainian does.

I will soon post several photos in this topic.....

Thor,
Always enjoy your pics. They have a big statue like that Yalta too and a few other places but none in the central to west  ukr. as far as I can remember. You are right about the south east where russian is the spoken language.  I notice alot of the kids wearing those red CCCP t-shirts last time I was there.
My wife is more northeast ukr. and I didn't realize for several months that what she was speaking was ukrainian and not russian, but in that region they all speak both.

Darryl,

Thanks for your kind commets regarding my picks. My wife always speaks Russian exsept when she talk with her mum who lives in Donetsk oblast. Then she talks Ukrainian. That is kind of strange for me since her mum is Russian and grew up in Rostov, Russia...My wife can talk both Russian and Ukrainian.

Here is a pick from the army universety in Kharkov.....Have you seen this symbol before....?? :) :D :)

HiTech,
Looks you you beat me to my dream to spend New Years in UKr. I've been there for almost everything else. Care to give short story?

Thor, Haven't seen the hammer and cycle for a long time. I always remember it from the old soviet flag. Which reminds me. When I was in Odesa long ago, and walking along the promenade, I was noticing the different flags on the gov. buildings. I saw the Israeli flag, Turkish flag, etc., then I asked what one particular flag was. It was the newer russian flag. I was surprised. It looked nothing at all like the old one. Maybe at the time I never considered that they had changed it.

The refusal by most city leaders to change street names (even city names) or to remove all the monuments to Lenin, Marx,  Dzerzhinsky and others, whose words and actions ruined an entire society, is the best evidence yet that those in charge today are still the old communist party appartchiks maquerading as democrats.
