A Worldwide 'Village' of 100 People
« on: August 03, 2005, 03:38:10 PM »
If we could shrink the earth's population to a village of precisely 100 people, with all the existing human ratios remaining the same, it would look something like the following. There would be:

57  Asians
21  Europeans
14  from the Western Hemisphere, both North and South
 8  Africans

52  would be female
48  would be male

70  would be non-white
30  would be white

70  would be non-Christian
30  would be Christian

89  would be heterosexual
11  would be homosexual

6  people would possess 59% of the entire world's wealth and all 6 would be from the United States

80  would live in substandard housing

70  would be unable to read

50  would suffer from malnutrition

One would be near death; one would be near birth

One, (yes, only 1) would have a college education

One would own a computer

When we consider our world from such a compressed perspective, the need for acceptance, understanding, and education becomes glaringly apparent

So I guess that I, being a white American Christian male, college educated and sitting in front of my computer, would be considered a minority... :P

Dan, besides those three good principles, I think there are many other important ones, like the need to deal with those governments that do nothing to further those principles, the need to promote capitalism and free trade, and the need to promote education in countries that fail in that area. I think it is best not to 'accept' the policies of tyrannical dictators, or 'accept' the teaching of hatred and fear. I think the concept of personal generosity should be encouraged on a national political level, while governmental foreign aid should be more closely scrutinized.

I am not sure that something like this can help.... capitalism is about success of individual... not success of communauty...

Several country who speak if capitalism and free trade don't respect these principle... best example are Europe and USA... we close our border to some product so, by example, African are not able to break the price... do you know that if USA was not blocking the African coton, these business will be dead in USA... the same for other product in Europa...

We promote the capitalism and free trade only in intern and for our exportation... OMC don't stop receive complain about USA and Europe about unfair practice of commerce... yes, we are the minority who control the majority...

As usual such statistics prove interesting points about who created them.

if 80 live in substandard housing, the standard is set a bit strange. Better imagine 20 living in above standard housing.

for the other thread readers...if 30 would be Christian, 25 would be Muslim ;)

out of the 6 from the United States (leaving 8 from the rest of the Western Hemisphere) that own 59% of the wealth, only one would have a college education.

If 50 suffer from malnutrition, there is a need for understanding, acceptance en education ?

There is only 1 guy who could educate the others.

There are 50 who need food, would they understand and accept that it is lack of education ?

No it is not a dog. Its really how I look.  ;)

Without problem but... the 50 other go give food and complain... this remember me a publicity from a humanitaire organisation : " if someone have hungry, don't give him a fish... give him the fishing material and learn him to fish "...

Yep, this is very true... we send yearly a lot of food with tank... send seed and tractor will be more interesting... they will be able to make own food... and in long term, it will be working better that yearly sending of food...

These who have hungry are ready to learn but where are the professor and the school material...

Only one problem Bruno.. water is needed. Most of the area within this village is comprised of sand and dust.

.. and very little oil for those tractors

First myth... water exist but they need material for pomp them deeply... some OMG work for instal pomp in each village... the water is more clean that these of river at several kilometer ... and not all place are from sand of dust... in africa, only the regio of sahara...

Now, maybe we can give manual material, not tractor... they have beef... they can use them... they have sun, electric energy from sun for pomp...

The only problem is us... don't wish use our imagination for help... but we can use it for block  their production...

When it was the Tsunami in Asian, several country have send money, inclusive Belgium... but we have send too specialist for learn people how use polyester for repair the fishing boot...

Money and food is good in the first time help... but something other is needed in the long time...
