HIV and other diseases in Ukraine

Here's an article from today's mignews.com re: infections in the Lugansk region. Let's be careful out there.

Water in Lugansk Region is a Deadly Force
In Lugansk region outdated water-supply and low quality water have put the region on it’s knees in face of epidemic of infectious diseases.
In particular, Lugansk region is exhausted by enteric infections, tuberculosis, HIV and recently such rare diseases as encephalitis. Doctors are alarmed by quick spreading of HIV infection. During last year HIV has spread from narrow category of drug addicts to all social groups.

So in the district the infection quickly moves away from status of drug addict’s disease only, it is now being diagnosed in all social groups. If formerly the disease had mostly spread via blood, then now one third of infections happens via sexual intercourse.

At the same time medical treatment of a single HIV infected person costs 10000 hryvna’s for the country each month. Mostly such districts as Rubezhnoe, Severskodonetzk and Lisichansk suffer because of HIV. More then half of infected are women. Medics tell about low level of knowelege concerning HIV among people. As the questioning had shown majority of infected herd about AIDS for the first time during diagnostics.

According to the words of Main State Sanitary Inspector of Lugansk region Anatoliy Dokashenko, “it appeared, that 10-15 percent of population do not know what AIDS is at all, that’s why people themselves are guilty that they are ill”.

There are more then 3000 HIV infected in Lugansk region now. But doctors say that real number is five times as much. Specialists state that financing and preventive measures are not enough to stop the epidemic. A lot depends on consciousness of people.

This is indeed bad news for the Ukrainian people.

Another aspect of related health issues that is rarely discussed is the melt down of the Chernobyl nuclear reactor in April 1986, a mere 80km north of Kiev.  Huge numbers (guesstimated at more than 300,000+ folks), of Ukrainians were irradiated for many hours before the Soviet government began evacuation of the affected areas.  While most of the radiation spread north and west into Belarus, even to the point that the radiation leak was detected in Sweden hours before the Soviets declared an emergency, the bulk of the severe damage, (within 30km) was done in Ukraine.

On another thread Peewee talks about checking a woman's teeth before asking her to marry, maybe he ought better to check that she doesn't glow in the dark.  Marriage to such an afflicted woman might be very painful in the long run, and the prospect of producing *FLBs* is a real possibility.

Can someone explain the link between low quality water and illness like tuberculosis ( Transmission can only occur from people with active TB disease ), HIV ( transmitted through direct contact of a mucous membrane with a bodily fluid containing HIV ) and encephalitis ( the most widespread cause of encephalitis worldwide is Herpes Simplex encephalitis, contracted through direct skin contact with an infected person ) !!!

Sexual behaviour, big familly in little appartment are more likely the real cause of all these illness.

Water can be a reason for enteric infection but not for the 3 other...

Yes Bruno, I can explain this to you. It is a Ukrainian news source, that like many other Ukrainian news sources, has great difficulty with the English language, and written communication in general. Surely you've been around the Ukraine scene long enough to know this. Whatever the case, thank you for educating the board that you cannot contract HIV from drinking water.

But of course, the important information for board members is to be aware of the increased rate of infectious diseases and take appropriate precautions. Most are able to read in between the lines.

Don't under estimate the % of idiot who will think that if they drink water in bottle, they will not have the need to use a condom during sex with a Lugansk woman... maybe one other will think that he is protected against HIV if he boil the Lugansk water...  ::)

I have never been to Lugansk.  I am going there in Sept.  One thing I can tell you for sure is drinking the water in some of the cities will protect you from HIV.  On my second EC tour to Kiev we all got sick from the water even though I drank bottled water.  I know for me, I was sick enough that I would not have even thought about having sex.  I could say why in more detail and the thoughts about it that ran through my mind, but I think it would be a little too raunchy

Be carefull when you are in cafe and ask ice block for your wiskey... and what about meal with rauw vegetable clean with tap water...

When i am on trip in FSU, i don't use bottled water... I use the same pill of sodium hypochlorite that in army... fill a can with 5 liter from tap water, put a pill inside, wait a few hours until the chlore odor/taste dissappear and drink.

Or more cheap, make like russian... don't drink bottle water, drink vodka  ::)
