Flooding
« on: August 01, 2008, 02:49:13 PM »
Has anyone here had folks in western Ukraine that were affected by the recent floods? The latest I read was 30 dead, 40,000 homes flooded and 20,000 people left homeless. Much of western Ukraine has been without power and 1,000's of acres of farm crops have been destroyed. A tough situation.

Don't know anyone. Ukraine has a large national flood monitoring and control bureaucracy, and I think its been known for centuries that they have high risk for floods in Western Ukraine. Are these Carpathian valleys or something?

Yeah, valleys and river bottom land in Ivano-Frankivsk and Chernivtsy regions. Moldova and Romania were hit pretty hard too. My 60 yo father in law to be says he could not recall ever seeing so much rain. Strangely enough the phone in my girls apartment has worked flawlessly over the rainy weather of the past 2 weeks. It has been a tough year (as any other) in Ukraine with dozens of people killed in industrial accidents,an economy in turmoil and all the infighting between Yuschenko and PM Tymoshenko. And the good folks of Ukraine endure as always.
