I would not even let them take a blood sample on me in Ukraine.

I have had my teeth worked on in Ukraine. Nothing medical and I'm not afraid to have any medical procedeure done there. My DIL just had 1/3 of her lung removed and she's fine. I paid for the operation, a total of a month in the hospital, the operation and everything was $3500 USD... Try that in the US or Europe...

edit:
SORT, I have no idea why you'd make a stement like that but I've seen worse conditions in the US than in Ukraine..
It's somewhat behind the times in having the latest, great gizzys but the ones that they have work just fine.

Please be more careful about adding mis-information that ends up in negative characterizations.   While most Ukranian hospital care may well be below the standard of experience in the west, that does not include all aspects of the medical profession.
Like India, Ukraine is becoming a medical vacation destination.  Whether transplants, elective cosmetic or dental procedures; some of the finest equipement and doctors are available in Ukraine.  Sure, the cost is higher than the "free" care readily available.  The options are roughtly the same as in this country.  You get what you pay for; Ukraine is a bargain for high end treatments.

When I toured some of the hospitals and clinics in Ukraine, something I noticed was that, while some equipment was definitely sub-par and outdated, some was state of the art. For example, I saw them using mason jars for urine collection and rewashing miscroscope slides.  On the other hand, I saw very modern ultrasound, anesthesia and cardiology equipment.  It all depended on what they could get handed down from Kiev.  Some of the private clinics are as well equipped as those anywhere.

In the US it seems it is important to always have the latest version of the medical equipment so they are constantly changing out their old stuff for the new even though the improvements of the new are often marginal at best and in the hands of a trained operator essentially the same.  the nice thing for countries like Ukraine is that they can buy the "old" equipment for pennies on the dollar or receive it as a donation for which the US hospital gets a tax write off.  So when you complain about your high medical bill, just think that you are paying for the improved care in Ukraine so you might as well use it when you are there.

In my trips to the dentist, the x-ray equipment was definitely old fashioned but worked just fine, and the equipment the dentist used was similar to what I was used to in the States.

An interesting note on the drill mentioned in the article.  A good hand drill in the majority of cases will work every bit as well as the ultra expensive medical ones.  My ex father-in-law, who was an orthopedic surgeon, got tired of paying the expensive prices for "surgical" drills so he went to the local hardware store and bought the exact same drill for a fraction of the cost.

I have a lot of issues with some parts of the medical care in Ukraine, but to make a blanket statement that it is to be avoided at all costs is just wrong.  Ultimately it all boils down to the quality of the physician, not the quality of the equipment, and, while I have seen my share of poorly trained Ukrainian doctors, I have seen some physicians do more with less there than any US physician I know.

I have a question.....

What is your thought on "not having sex" and "not having children" as a reason for medical problems.

I have been told about two ladies that have medical problems and the reason for there problems is stated above.

I am not a doctor, so I really don't know....... But one had cancer (not having sex) and the other pain in her breast (not having children).

I read once on this forum "Sex for fun". I thought I remember someone post that sometimes doctors would prescribe sex.....

I am no doctor, just curious about your thoughts.

While some of the medical solutions might sound strange to our ears, they seems to work just as good or better as 'traditional' medicine.
The lower facilities actually make better doctors, as they have to come up with alternatives for hi-tech medications and equipment.

Regarding sex as medication, due to the high level of hormones and adrenaline produced, there might very well be a healthful effect from it. However if your long-distance relationship starts mentioning it you might be on the wrong track.  ;)
No it is not a dog. Its really how I look.  ;)

I am no doctor, just curious about your thoughts.

Studies have shown that there is an increased incidence of breast cancer in nuns which they believe is due to the lack of reproductive activity and breast feeding. It's probable that someone took that idea and stretched it to claim that not having children was the cause of this woman's breast pain, but there's no basis for this that I am aware of.  The most common cause of breast pain is fibrocystic breast condition, which is influenced by the hormonal cycles of menstruation.  Some studies suggest that increased caffeine intake can be a cause.  Sex or having children is not a factor either way.

Not having sex, or enough sex, does not lead to cancer.  In fact, prostitutes have the highest rates of uterine cancer of anyone.

This leads to a difficult dilemma - don't have sex and increase your risk of breast cancer, or have a lot of sex and increase your risk of uterine cancer.  :noidea:

Of course one can always find statistics or quotes from "medical authorities" that allow you to claim to your wife that you are insisting on much sex strictly out of concern for her health.  :flowers:

One of the stranges things I heard was one woman from Moscow who was told that her sciatica was caused by problems with her uterus and that this condition was quite common in Moscow because of the climate.  I don't recall sex being mentioned as a possible cure, but then she was in her fifties.  Maybe if she had been in her twenties the doctor might have had different treatment options.

Thanks for the info Shadow and Scott.

What do you mean, I was going to get a note from my doctor for my next visit. ;D  But Scott kind of spoiled that. :(

I just found it very interesting and was curious.

Last year I watched a show on either the Discovery Channel or The Learning Channel. It was about a young Russian girl who claimed to be able to diagnose peoples medical conditions. Some people claimed that she even healed them. The show was "The girl with the x-ray eyes" or something like that, it was very interesting.

Some think tank in New York had her come to America to prove her abilities. Some say she fail and some say she pasted their tests.
