I'm not sure where this belongs, but I'm going to Transdniestr, Bender being my final destination.  I'm looking for the best way to get there with the least amount of hassle.  What papers I will need such as invitations, registering, etc.  I think I need the visa for Moldova, and then just register once I reach Bender. This sound right?

Hey Charlie, welcome back! I don't know anything about Moldova but its cool that you're puttin' your hat in the ring. No matter what, it should be an interesting trip. Good luck.

Hi Charlie,

this is an "interesting Q" as this region is a Russian speaking region of Moldova that believes it is a separate country - which de facto it is - but de jure it is not...

So you are going to get lot's of conflicting advice...

anyway some links to get you started:
http://www.romaniaandmoldova.com/transdvisa.htm

http://rolandharris.blogspot.com/2006/07/visa-watch-part-2-transdniestr.html

http://www.marisha.net/transnistria.htm

and may be the best link for you : http://www.marisha.net/crossroads.htm

Good luck :) I, for one, want to hear if you make this trip !

I'd still be inclined to go in via Kishinev and frankly, for the price you can negotiate, I'd do a taxi deal from there. It simply is not that far to anywhere in Moldova. By the time you mess about and organise other transport you'd be where you want to be.

To the best of my knowledge, you still need a letter of invitation.

I think I need the visa for Moldova
Which you obtain at the airport. IIRC it is $60 USD and you need the ORIGINAL of the invitation letter.

You must register within 3 days.

A visa is no longer required to enter Moldova for USA and several others.  I have decided to stay in Chisinau where I will be picked up at the airport by the couple that I will be renting one of their apartments and who speak english.  She is a little over an hour from Chisinau and will be staying with me.  Now she wouldn't mind if I showed up at her front door, but she agreed that there is more to do and see in Chisinau because of its size.  I told her about the horror stories I have heard trying to enter and leave Transdniestr and she told me they have even tried to make up charges on her to get her to pay.  So if we do go to Transdniestr she will be with me.  Iv'e never known a woman as protective as her.  It wouldn't surprise me one bit if she called the couple in Chisinau to see if they are ligit.

Hey Stevie,  I didn't mean to be rude the first time around. Just get in a hurry sometimes.  Hows is going bro?  ;D

Stevie has left the Building Charlie..... unfortunately, he felt slighted by a couple of Members. He's missed.

My wife is from Tiraspol, a few miles from Binderi in the Transdnestr region. I haven't been for few years now. TBH I find it exhausting going back there, as does the wife, so we prefer to bring the inlaws to the UK or to visit Chisinau or even Odessa, which is a little over an hours drive to Transdnestr.

The check-points are a bit of a nightmare and I wouldn't attempt to negotiate them without the wife. If you can't speak Russian you're going to pay 50 times the going rate to get through. The queues can be massive and you can spend as long queuing as you spend driving on a trip to Odessa.

Get a multiple entry visa as it costs only a little more and you'd be surprised how easy it is to pass out and back into the country with all those regions and checkpoints.

Don't forget to try the local Cognac. It's about a dollar a bottle and some of the smoothest I've tasted.

Good luck.

My wife is from Chisinau.  It is a great city with friendly people, beautiful women, and nice surroundings.  A tour through a winery is a must.  This is the place to go if you like wine.  Moldova won 2 medals for their wine this year at a European competition.

I would stay away from Transdneister especially after what happened in Georgia.  The very same thing is occuring there, not war but bad relations with Moldova and they have Russian troops on guard and "keeping the peace".  A very dangerous place for Americans I would think.

We have a good relationship I/O.  She can tell me F u and I can do the same, and we  still manage to have a conversation the next day. Funny, but it works.  I dont know what holds us together, but we  have learned how to fight, without destroying everything.  RW and eastern Ky coal miner.  Imagine that.

Next time you turn on the lights, thank a coal miner :D
