She explains that she wants an Old English Dog.  I have no idea what the breed is.  She shows me one.  It is a Great Dane!!!

Interesting/ fascinating post - well, to me anyway  ;D

Slightly OT, it reminded me of why I responded to my wife's ad/bio.  It wasn't one of the usual I want, calm, nice, patient, loaded man but she talked about her pet German shepherd dog and her tortoise.  Not that I was really interested in marrying her for her pets, of course.

But back OT, if on the same way that I assumed a German Shepherd Dog was what we might call an Alsation in the UK, I would have assumed an Old English dog was an Old English Sheepdog.  However, when I was shown some pictures of this dog, it didn't look much like a German Shepherd Dog to me, but possibly some other huge breed which, from the picture, could have been one of a few.

As it happens, we went to a dog show so I set out to try to determine what breed this large dog was.  It was easy to eliminate the good old GSD as Alla immediately said no, that definitely wasn't it, so I showed her some possibilities.  Turns out it was a Great Dane.

I'm just wondering, do these FSU Great Danes have some special power that enables them to masquerade as other breeds.  Do, in fact, FSU women go into a shop and ask for a Chihauhau and come out with a Great Dane, completely none-the-wiser.  As I said - interesting/fascinating.

Personally, I've always wanted a Newfie.  However, I'm a bit reluctant now as I might end up with an FSU Great Dane - which wasn't really what I had in mind  :-\

Good luck with the dog-hunt.

gator, I don't know if the problem with the dog is still on your agenda. This is my advice (don't know maybe someone already gave it to you, didn't have time to read till the end).
You tell your lady: "Ok, dear!" And remeber, from now on this will be the most important phrase in your life. then you say following: "There are a lot of dogs who need to be saved, and I believe we can find the one you want at the nearest kennel... (Verify in advance that at the moment you'll be visiting it they don't have those huge dogs there). Then you take her to the kennel... her heart will not resist those poor creachures who stuck there... And she'll forget about that huge dog of hers... her instinct will be to save at least one of those, so, she'll pick up some smaller dog (hopefully) :D

Rose,

Thanks for the good advice.  I am a dog lover and would happily save one from elimination.

RW do not like used things even if it is a valuable antique.  Will there be a stigma about a dog from a shelter?

The more time I spend with my Moscow woman, the more complacent and flexible I become.  A good sign.  Who knows - we may get two Great Danes and breed them.  When no one buys the puppies, we will have 6-8 Great Danes walking around the house.   :o  I doubt if I will ever become so flexible to allow that.

I don't know, it depends on your strategy. You might buy for her as a present a movie "My friend Skip" (hope I wrote it correctly), or Red... (what was the name?... sorry, senior moment) Also about dogs, or one famous Russian movie " White Bim, black ear" this movie is in Russian with English subtitles. After she'll start drowning in tears you might suggest her to do "the right thing".
You see, theoretically, you can do whatever you want, you just need "prepare" the other party to process and accept your version.
Good luck!

P.S. Or buy chihuahua and tell you that this is a Toy Old English Dog. :D

Rose,

Great photo!  Actually if given a choice between a Chihuahua or a Great Dane, I would choose the latter.  Thank God she does not like cats.

This is what women do to men, not the reverse.   :)  Besides, I am very transparent.   Nevertheless, she is fair-minded if no one tries to bull$hit her so we need to discuss the options upon her arrival.  To be fair to her, I have never spent much time around a Great Dane, so I need to visit a family with one.

Well I can vouch for Gator as being a man who likes dogs.  And dogs like him!

Gator was here visiting Marina and me a couple of weeks ago.

Our dog just stood at his feet, head cocked up at his tall frame, and smiled as Gator talked to his Moscow Woman by phone.  Gator laughed and told her "this dog is just standing here looking at me :-)"

Gator, bring her over to meet our dog.  As you know, we have a medium sized large dog. Not a great dane, but not a poodle, either.   I think she will like him, and you'll be able to get a dog like him, and not a horse of a great dane!     ;D  LOL

I've really enjoyed this thread!  Right after I returned from Ukraine, Olga and I had the "dog" conversation.  I told her she could have a dog, but not a huge dog.  So the two of them (Olga and her 13yr old daughter) spent the next couple of days looking through "dog atlas".  They've decided on a Golden Retriever, which is fine by me, but I might try taking them to the dog shelter when the time comes.

I must plead ignorance.  I did not know how important it is to have a dog in the family.  I know now.

Nice puppies. We were just looking at some pictures Moscow Watchdogs. But lack the space as they need a bigger sleeping place than we.  ;)

OMG NOOOOOOOOOOO......  that cat is so cute I might just start nagging Mrs Kuna!  ;D

bgreed,  is that a Russian Blue or British Shorthair (Blue)? My wife still has her eye on the rounder British Blue but we'll wait now till after our trip next year before adding another to the family.
