Scammers out in full force!!!!
« on: August 21, 2008, 06:19:31 PM »
A friend of mine got interested in meeting a Russian Woman as well after I married my wife from Ukraine. I knew he was interested and he expressed his interest to join me on a trip to Ukraine. Little did I know he had registered on sites to meet ladies. The other day he contacted me concerning ladies he had been writing to.

I stopped by his house early today and he showed me the emails. He was begining to get concerned about the ladies and said he found it very hard writing to them based on their letters.

He was writing to about 13 ladies. As soon as I saw the letters they instantly all seemed like FORM letters. It just seems the scammers have gone more to the form letter with insert name here Right away my gut said these were fake.

So we began the process of googling email addresses.
This eliminated half of the ladies right away as scammers. Their emails showed on several scam websites.

6 down 7 to go.

Now I began to take phrases from letters and googled them.

4 of the ladies letters showed up on forums etc... My friend was even getting the letters in the same order. However some got smart enough to switch photos as to ones others posted with the same letters.
Shame I had to ruin the fun. he was only a couple of letters away from eternal love and famous trip to travel agency for a first time meeting in USA. :cluebat:

10 down 3 to go.

Now came time to look at email headers for the last 3 ladies.

IP address assosiated with 2 of the ladies had nothing to do with Russia or Ukraine. In fact they leaded back to USA.
However I know this is not an adzact science but from the letters I told him he could cross them off the list as well. The ladies asked in about every email if he enjoyed traveling which he had answered in at least 4 emails previously. These letters also never seemed more then a prewrite since they went no where and answered nothing nor mentioned one thing he ever asked.

12 down 1 to go.

Now the last one is tricky. Only wrote him one letter so far. The lady has a Yahoo.co.uk email address which usually makes me uneasy when they do not use .ru emails. I know some do this but I have found most to use other emails usually are the scammers. I wonder if this is because those who do so are not even Russian and could not even begin to navigate their way through mail.ru since they cannot read a word of Russian to sign up for an account.

My friend did write to her first and she commented on things he did say. We checked the IP address that sent the letter and it did come from Ukraine where she is supose to be. The letter was in my opinion overly friendly for a first letter. In letter she already called him DEAR. Already mentioned "I hope you will not break my heart" and a few other things I do not remember off hand I thought were too forward for first letter. However it did end in KISS TO YOU.

He will write this one with caution but soon too to say anything.

So out of 13 ladies he was writing we know 12 were scammers and 1 strong possible.

Taking information from here and using the internet it was Amazing to find out he was spending his time writing to all fake Women.
Needless to say he did not feel the same about this adventure by the time I left. I arrived to see my friend happy and excited about the possabilites in front of him to seeing someone completely lost. Although I did not like to see him this way I know if I did not help him to research before hand it would have been alot worse later.
I think at this point I will introduce him to some of my wifes friends.

Ravens,

My experience found many scammers in free email forums.  It takes many many letters.  The best way to go is to Ukraine and meet 5-10 women in their country.  From there you will meet sincere and some scammers.  Kiev and Odessa have a higher PD/Sincere woman ratio.  The best thing to do is buy a ticket and take the plunge.  Had 25 intro letters through an agency and you will meet many beautiful women.  Best of luck.

Ravens,

Why not introduce him to a couple of reputable sites where the ratio would be much more in his favor? Elenas, Ladagirl ect.. I imagine it can get grueling, tiresome and deflating having to play detective on every letter

Faux Pas,

In all honesty I am not familiar with many of the sites Men would use to meet ladies. I was very lcuky with what happened to me.
I used one site (HRB would never recommend) and with special coding in letters was my wife and I able to connect on our own. This is as far as my experience goes. However any recomendations others can give I will pass along to him.
Thanks.

Ravens

I never looked at exclusively Ukraine. I honestly don't know of many as some others might as I only joined a few. My best luck was with Elena's Models. I had much contact with at least 50 ladies from there and if there was one scammer in the bunch I could not detect it. Another one that I had joined  which I think is out of business now was global7. There was another in Kyrgyzstan called svetlanasbrides which was a good one. Much smaller but monitored very well. There were a couple of others but scammers were all over those. I'm sure some members know of more. Maybe the will chime in. There are plenty of good sites out there.

I have been using the large dating sites and had good results.
Where your friend failed was to recognize the obvious scam letters.
Did you check with him what criteria he used for taking contact to the women ?
No it is not a dog. Its really how I look.  ;)

I would stick with referalls from friends and sites listed at www.honestmarriageagencies.com or recommend by someone you know.

Too many scammers use the free sites to bait men.

I used RussiaEuro......

Anybody could send a letter to a paying member. I responded to every letter I received. With a very short letter and I had three simple questions. If the reply did not answer my questions, I moved on to the next. That was my system. The letters I sent were also very short and had simple three questions. The sincere ladies seem to respond with a short letter as well and answered my question.

That was my experience.

Your Opinions Needed!!!!
« Reply #8 on: August 24, 2008, 01:03:32 PM »
I previously stated I was helping a friend try and spot some scammers writing to him.
Did a good job so far however one has us both stumped.
Looking for your opinions on this one.

Friend is 31 she is 27 from Ukraine. So age difference is good.
She is using a yahoo.co.uk email address however the IP the letters are coming is from Ukraine as she says she is from.

She does read his letters because she replies to things he has written.
Usually the first sentence in the letter response to things he wrote and then the ending also responds to things he has written.
The middle of the letters is what confuses me.

I googled some of the phrases and have found whole pargraphs online in other ladies profiles and also in scammer letters. Sometimes things will be changed. Example he received letter we found the whole paragraph online.
In the paragraph was written "I read books by the following authors" (authors names listed) this remained the same as what we saw online. Next part said "I listen to the following groups" Groups names were listed. Some were the same and some were changed.
Now we usually find two paragraphs per letter online almost word for word, however the paragraphs are found in two separate letters or profile descriptions. Never received full letter word for word.

The confussion is if this is a scammer or someone who is having problems with writing letters so they playjuries a bit.

She does ask if they connect would he be willing to travel and see her as to not waste her time if he is not willing to travel for meeting. This gave it a feeling of being legit to me since most scammers try the route of "I want to visit you. Send money for visa" ordeal.

My only concern is will this turn into "I have a sick relative. Send money for operation" scam.

He is hoping this one is real and reason for trying to get to the bottom of if real or not.

The only thing I could think of at the moment to tell him to do was write to her and recommend talking on the phone saying it would be better then letters to get to know each other.

He wrote her short letter saying this. Waiting to see reply.

Any opinions or advice on how to proceed? You guys no more then me.

Editing this to add. He did contact her first. I know to some this is a factor and figured I would add this information.

I would use skype to video chat, it is free.

The only problem may be her Internet connection.

My fiancee lives in a Ukraine, in a smaller city and it works great for us.

Good luck!

Personally speaking, I wouldn't toss her out.  I have found that I would not write unless at most the trip is 90 days away, I would start at about 30 days away myself.  I like that she wants to see you and doesn't want to waste your time.  I think that is a good sign, stronger than your red flag.  DON'T GET EMOTIONALLY ATTACHED WITHOUT MEETING!!!  You will get scammed...or worse...MARRIED!!!  I am talking from experience.

There are two possibilities here.

First one is that she does not write her own letters but uses a 'ghost agency'. This will in the near future be revealed as a 'friend' helping her. Reason would be that her English is very limited. If she agrees to a phone call but has problems in English, use your own interpreter.

Second one is an 'attentive' scam where the middle part is constructed from form letters and the beginning and end are written. Check for differences in writing style.

No it is not a dog. Its really how I look.  ;)

Those phrases which gave so much concern reminded me high school when we learned primitive sentences and tried to put them together for out tests. I'd bet on limited knowledge. I'd agree with Shadow, I wonder if the beginning and the end are similar in a style with the middle part.
