Question about Ukrainian marriage
« on: November 08, 2008, 12:51:47 AM »

  Gentlemen,

I have some questions regarding getting married in Ukraine. Most importantly, which documents are necessary to obtain a marriage licence.

I have received the following information from a source in Ukraine but there are a few details which I do not understand:

  1. You need to translate your Canadian passport into Ukrainian in the embassy of Ukraine in Canada. This translation is as an original document with the embassy stamp. It is very important that that the translation mast be correct.

Can this translation be made in Ukraine?

2. It is necessary to represent the original passport and copies of the pages of this passport where there is a stamp of board crossing and immigration card.

So the passport and copies must be presented and stamped at passport control?

3. You should call to Canadian Embassy which is situated in Ukraine and ask about the documents, which are necessary to represent to get the following documents in Ukraine:
1. Statement in-live of certificate of no impediment to marriage.

I know that I can get one of these documents from dept. of Vital Statistics in Saskatchewan but does it also need the stamp of approval from Ottawa.

2. Statutory Declaration.

I have no idea what this is or what would be required to get it.

When you get these two documents you should make them legal in the Ministry of Foreign Affair in Ukraine.

When all documents are ready  give all these documents for checking-up and if everything will be O.K.  go to the Marriage Department, where you should register your marriage.

Before your leaving Canada please take a document from your permanent job, in which your job authorities certify that they give you permission for a temporary vacation from certain date.... to certain date and put your job stamp on this document. This document will give you a possibility to get married quickly,  no need to wait for marriage registration long time.

Is this necessary? I have read that presenting your airline tickets showing length of stay would get the same results or if that doesn't work, a bribe probably would.

Any insight or direction in this matter would be greatly appreciated.

 Thanks,
  Rob

- I have married my wife as french but took informations for both citizenship.  You can have the best and updated information from your future wife. She has to go to the ZAGS and ask which papers are needed to marry a canadian citizen.

- To my knowledge, you need copy of your passport, translated in Ukrainian
- Translation of certificate of birth with apostille and that must be legalized
- Proof that you have no criminal past (document must have apostille)
- Proof that you are single (document must have apostille) that must be legalized

You can do all translations in Ukraine. To legalize a document, you will have to go to ministry of foreign affair in Ukraine, the process take one day, you give papers the morning and get them the evening.

About time for registration two ways to do it: document from work or bribe... both works .

I got married in Ukraine and what I needed was the following; (I'm an american citizen but I believe the documents required are the same, only the meandsof obtaining them is different)

I needed an official birth certificate with apostille attached and translation of both.

copy of passport with translation

Certifications of prior marriage and divorce decrees with apostille attached and translation of both

Statement of nonimpediment to marriage with translation which must be legalized by the Ministry of foreign affairs.

No certificate of criminal history was required.

In my case I was living in Ukraine at the time so all translations were done in Ukraine.  I got the US embassy nonimpediment to marriage form in Simferopol while they were paying a visit to ex-pats there so a trip to Kiev wa not necessary.  There is a ministry of foreign affairs in Simferopol so the legalization was done there without a trip to Kiev.

After having the documents of marriage approved, we presented the approval document to ZAGS, who sets a date no less than 30 days later.  We had no problem with this as I was there. Actually we waited even longer because my wife insisted that a marriage in May was bad luck. I'm not so sure a document from work will be 100% effective.  The one official exemption to the 30 day waiting period that I know of is if the woman is pregnant.  A nice donation for a doctor's note to this effect works just fine.  A "donation' to ZAGS specifically often works okay also.  The best is one of these notes AND the donation.

Have your fiance' check with ZAGS and do a thorough internet search to be sure exactly what you need.
