Termites
« on: November 24, 2008, 07:38:33 AM »
I have done some checking and I cannot find any information about this topic, so here goes.

Are there any TERMITES in Russia? How about Siberia?

When I was in Omsk, I saw several beautiful, old wooden buildings. I also see pictures posted here (like Jets) and on this site. They don't look like they suffer from any kind of termite damage?

I know they have some very dangerous ticks in Siberia that carry typhus and the encephalitis virus. I love camping and I wanted to camp out in the forest when I was there, but I was warned that it was probably not a good idea.

Termites in FSU were noticed in Fergana region, Odessa region and Vladivostok region . Siberia is too cold for them, but we have our own tree (or wood) bugs.  ;)

Wouldn't Siberian Cedar Pine be resistent to termites anyway?

LOL.. I have some friends that live on the mountaina bove the San Francisco Bay.  its a gorgeous place surrounded by old growth live oaks and douglass fir.  Down the ravine it is full of redwood.  Anyway.. they are having  amassive termite problem which we solved by replacing the termite destruction with Alaskan yellow cedar.  It was expensive but the termites wont touch it.

Termites aren't much of a problem in colder climates.  Here in Vermont, you never see them, and there are no termite inspections for real property transfers.

Carpenter Ants, however, can be an equally big problem.

I'm not a specialist in such issue, but I think it is because of cedar resin.

well they didn't want to use any chemicals on their property... plus the damage was already done and the whole side of the house had to be replaced.. cedar framing and siding.. should last forever.. well at least till they retire and sell the place.

They've got problems in Sochi  -  and a growing population of the critters in Uzbekistan. 2,100 structures,
mostly homes, were infested in 1992 - this year the trouble is six-fold. Apparently certain strains are
developing a degree of immunity to colder environs over there. The Uzbeck Academy of Science's Zoology
Department is developing an iron-based "bait" as they call it, with desired results emerging.

Yeah, cedar seems to be the way to go.

Warmer climates = more bugs.  I am usually shocked by how much of a problem dry rot is in California.

Doesn't sound much of an innovation :( ;).

So how do you "bump off" these little critters...?

We've recently had our furniture arrive from Cyprus ( a lot warmer) and I can see loads of new holes where it looks like they have made a bid for freedom during the trip in the container. I didn't pay too much attention in Cyprus as our place their was of Concrete construction - here in the UK, it is brick clad timber frame ..

Now I haven't *heard* if any one is at "home" but if they are still... What is the best way to terminate a termite, please ?

That depends on your tolerance to chemicals in your house.  If you don't care about the supposedly safe chemicals there should be some sort of company in your locale that deals with this.  However, you should first be sure they are actually termites.  There are all kinds of different insects that feed on wood.  I don't know enough about woods and bugs from Cypress to give a qualified answer.  However, at one point when I was living in Mexico I was contracted by a museum to restore an antique chair used by the Arch Bishop.  The chair needed to be refinished and have the bugs killed.  In that situation we just gassed them.  The chair was on display in an airtight glass case so we filled the case with gas.  It was actually VERY risky as the gas is explosive.  But, there was no real alternative because any of the other available materials would have attacked what was left of the finish and totally destroyed the fabric.  So, we used gas and monitored it for two weeks.  That was in 1987 and the chair is still bug free, fabric in same condition as it was and the shellac restoration intact.
