A strange Food / Travel question
« on: January 02, 2010, 01:01:45 PM »
I have never tried it in the past, but was considering trying to get a jar of peanut butter in my checked luggage.
No one seems to have seen / tried it before (at least no one I know) in Ukraine.  I thought it might be fun.
But....
Can it survive in the subzero temperature travel in checked luggage?
Is if even allowed?  I don't know the food regulations.
Not sure I can squeeze it in my small carry on, or if that's acceptable.

Thanks.

In the past i've taken it before, so have many others,,
both in carry on ,and in checked luggage. (the luggage compartment temps dont hurt it seemingly. but the lower pressure may open it some,, i'd put the whole jar (a plastic one)  in a zip lock just to be a careful? but it never opened on me before)
it's usually a decent "hit", as it is unique.

with newer security measures , it might not make it through  *carry on*,

but -
if you bought it within  the airports *stores* it would ;)
just like water /pop/ candy bars etc..
not sure if the airport stores would have it.. but some might, depending on the airport?

Definitely not allowed in the carry on. As AJ said use a ziplock in your checked bag, shouldn't be a problem.

Anything you buy in duty free is OK for carry on, but if you take another flight it must be in a sealed bag from duty free, or in your checked bag.

No way in the carry on bag but checked bags are ok.

I can't comment on Ukraine, but
I've taken many things to Russia without any problem, peanut butter being one of them, and also jelly, candy, whiskey, bread, fruits, cookies, cat food, and several more items that are too numerous to list.

Thanks Gentlemen.

I will indeed try it in a zip-locked bag in the checked in luggage.

Gylden

Not necessarily. I once bought some really nice vodka, a few bottles, in the duty free shop in St. Pete, if I remember correctly. Could have been Kiev. But the point was that I had to transit through Frankfort, and even though the bags were hermitically sealed, I could not bring them on as carry on luggage. Having no time to exit the terminal, re pack and then go back through security, I had to dump them. That pi$$ed me off for a few weeks. Duty free is great if not liquids and having to go through a pit stop.
