That's the problem; I haven't heard anything original emerge from the Russian music scene, except a few non-format artists with rather insignificant audience.  Definitely no notable exports (except those two little Tattoo lesbians, but they are not too original either :D).

The buzzword is that Pop-Locking actually had it's roots from Russia's , married to the street/African beat, which in turn gave way to Break Dancing (BBoys). So in essence, Russ is simply taking back what always belonged to them.

But in terms of contemporary dance/artistry, I do understand your point.

Sandro, LOL. Obviously you haven't listened to Techno sounds. Manuel Noriega would've surrendered a day earlier had that music been around then...

Rap music is not for me and it's too funny in itself to be taken seriously. Another generation of youngsters are sucked into what they think is an original expression of something...lol.

that you tube makes good comedy.

Russian DJ's in the genre "Trance / Electronica" have a good reputation.  RAP?  I am no expert.

I am happy NOT to listen to the same old tired music of the 70's 80's and 90's - THAT'S FOR SURE.

Granted, but music has always required both repetition AND variation, unless aimed at hypnosis or brain-washing ;).

Hip-Hop, and Rap in particular, are excruciatingly repetitive :(.

LOL, I love the swinging pocket watch, that was a nice touch. I can't argue that it's repetitive, but there is some highly musically interesting hip-hop. I often cite The Roots as a good example, because they do live instrumentation.

I personally think there could be a lot more instrumentation, and actual melody... But at the same time you have to take a look at what an MC does, with good rap, there's a cadence to the lyrics, like poetry. We can argue til the cows come home the content of the lyrics, but taking Jay-Z's "Reasonable Doubt" for an example, he uses a lot of couplets throughout the entire album. That's not something that was by accident.

Wouldnt be my first choice of music, but i could tolerate it if i had to. Cant remember knowing a single girl who liked rap. Some songs can be nice, but very very very few.
I like trance/dance/techno/pop/instrumental eletric guitar music  :) No vocals anywhere except pop. Some old music is also nice.

Recourse to couplets (pairs of lines of verse ending in the same rhyme) repeated over and over is the simplest, and most artless, form of poetry, IMHO ;).

Poetry is poetry... I'm not saying I think Jay-Z is on the same level as Ralph Waldo Emerson or Walt Whitman... Then again, they didn't live in the age of consumerism and marketing.

Congrats to you in seeing that Emerson>Jay Z.  There is hope for you yet.  Just don't join that legion of morons who throw away a dollar to get a nickle just in order to fit in with some tedious peer group.

In my opinion, there is some rap/hip-hop music that is worth to listen to. I personally prefer a lighter, more melodic tunes but occasionally I find a song or two in a style outside of my usual preferences.
Because I do some writing myself I often listen attentively song lyrics and the meaning that a song conveys. Some hip-hop/rap music can be interesting, even somewhat truthful this way. I wouldn't call those lyrics a masterpiece but I definitely able to appreciate the way some writers put the words together. Nowadays I don't listen to the Russian music much but whenever I feel homesick I might play a couple of Russian tunes. Recently I've discovered a new artist for myself. This music is not for an intellectual, obviously, but I kinda like it. It is a hip-hop/r&b band called Лигалайз. Here is the link for one of their songs

Their other songs are not bad either. Whoever is writing their lyrics is got some talent.
