Russian words for F*
« on: September 04, 2009, 03:21:31 PM »
:D

PS - you are picking up the expressive American vernacular very well:  prick, a$$hole, ....  Welcome to America.

Speaking of such:

A UW (living in Ukraine) whom I have exchanged a few e-mails with complained to me in her most recent message that her woman supervisor 'uses the F word' quite often.

I don't really want to ask her if she means the English spelled F word, or if she is referring to a Russian or Ukrainian equivalent.  But I am curious just the same.

So ladies, or knowledgeable men, is there a Russian equivalent that is used frequently by many similarly to some in US who use the F word in virtually every sentence?

I just now remembered that a RW once told me there was no simple word similar to our 'sex' (as is having it) and that the closest words she knew would be 'intimacy' or 'intimate relations.'  She also told me she had never heard of Russian equivalents to the English P*ssy, Tw*t or C*nt and that all she had ever known or heared was 'intimate place.'

So I am dubious if the UW supervisor really was saying the F word in Russian.  Probably she was using the English F word.

Is it common that the English F word is used extensively by RW/UW who tend to talk in such a manner, when the rest of their words are mainly in Russian/Ukrainian?

Was she raised in a convent? One of the most common Russian swear words is пизда (with its many derivatives) which signifies the female genital organs (i.e. c*unt in English).

Why are you dubious?

Right, because it's a well-known fact that educated upper-class Ukrainian women speak English among themselves.. :D

I think the two most frequently used Russian equivalents of f-ck and f-king would be pizdets and ebanyi, respectively..

ETA: Blyad is also very common for both.. :rolleyes2:

When we first started dating, my wife dropped the f-word on me (in English).

Shocked, I informed her that it is an ugly word and that she should not use it.  She asked, "Why not, I hear it all the time in American films."   :D

I then asked her for the f-word in Russian.  She lowered her head and said "No," it is horrible.  I asked her to spell it and she could not do that either.  She never wanted to hear that word, not even in bad Russian pronunciation.

So evidently the English f*ck is more widely accepted than the Russian counterpart.  There is no English word that is more versatile as demonstrated in this short clip:

It may be more accepted among English speaking women in the international dating game, but most Russians don't go around dropping F bombs.. In fact, the only times I've heard Russians use that word in the local context were when they were giving someone the middle finger, and that's what f@#k means around here, it's just a word for flipping the bird.. ;)

This was something that I noticed even among my youngest students.  They had no qualms  dropping the F-bomb into normal conversation.  They often used the term Mother F*****  as if it were nothing.  A woman I knew let me know in no uncertain terms that she wanted me to f*** her.

Efforts to explain the gravity of these words were only moderately successful.  The woman was finally able to understand that there are far more polite terms with which to express her desires.  The students, however were a bit more difficult.  There really isn't anything in any of the English texts that can adequately explain why certain words are not for use in normal conversation.

Kids being kids, they of course proceeded to use the words as often as possible.  While I was initially upset, over time I realized that they were conjugating the verb properly, so in a backhanded way I guess I did manage to teach them something...

It seems clear that words mean less in the English language to most people.

When watching TV or movies people are confronted with words like f*ck constantly, as a result they believe it is common and natural to use them.
Thank Hollywood and MTV for this.  ;)

People using swear words sound more vulgar when they place the stress on them (F*CK), as is usual speech behaviour.

I made this curious discovery observing a countess family friend of ours, a rather wild woman with the salty vocabulary of a stevedore whose speech amazingly did not sound as vulgar as it should have - she didn't stress her swear words and pronounced them as normal words ;).

For people who are interested in such part of Russian folk art as mat and can read and understand Russian  probably would be interesting to read Pushkin's erotic poetry.  ;)

Орлов с Истоминой в постели
В убогой наготе лежал
Не отлечился в жарком деле
Непостоянный генерал.
Не думав милого обидеть
Взяла Лариса микроскоп
И говорит: "Позволь увидеть
Чем ты меня, мой милый, ёб"
Alexander Pushkin, 1817

The machine translation is not too erotic.

Eagles with The the [istominoy] in the bed
 at wretched nudity lay
not [otlechilsya] in the hot matter
 inconstant General.
Not [dumav] dear to offend
 took Larissa microscope
 he says: “Allow to see
than you me, my dear, [eb] "
 Alexander Pushkin, 1817

Machines and literal translations can never do a Russian poet justice. Nor will they save
a budding East West relationship from misunderstanding or worse.

Orlov and Istomina lay in bed
in abject nakedness
The undependable general
had not distinguished himself in the ardent affair.
Without any offense to her dear friend
Larisa took out a magnifying glass
and said, "Let me have a look
at what you've been f*cking me with, my dear."

Often Russian editors would simply substitute words
or replace them entirely with dashes or dots so as to
preserve the bulk of the passage while satisfying codes
of decency in the day. In this case, however, the
original words were allowed to remain intact - allowing
Pushkin to exact his sharp critique of General M.F. Orlov.

Such salty language by Pushkin is found in profusion in
a volume entitled, Pushkin Without Censorship.

This topic reminds me of a bumper sticker I saw several years ago, on the back of a welders pick-up truck.

The bumper sticker said the usual "Hows my driving" then followed by "Any Complaints? Call: 1-800-FUC-KOFF"

I still chuckle today when I think about it.

"A well known fact"?
To whom though?
However, our foreign brides do converse in Russian and throw in an occasional American expression to the mix.
Also, I've [suprisingly] overheard background English used on a phone call to Russian speaking Ukraine homes.
I find myself saying 'bling' because I am tired of all the usual American sailor cuss words.

tfcrew,

you also can use such innocent expressions as yozhkin kot (ёжкин кот), yokarny babai (ёкарный бабай) and yadryona vosh (ядрена вошь)  :D

You know how in tsarist Russia the elites used to speak French or replace certain Russian words with their French counterparts?. Well, that's what I'm talking about, only these days English seems to be the in language among certain types..;)
