I will be in Kiev from Sept 24th -October 6th.

If anyone is going to be there then I'll buy you a beer at Obriens. One of my best friends whom I graduated with some 20+ years ago is stationed in Afghanistan and he's taking his leave in Kiev. He's never married but would like to meet a nice girl. This is going to be fun. I do hope he can meet his soulmate. The guy had been out of the service for some 15 years and just rejoined a year ago. Of course my lovely wife will make the trip along with our baby girl but they will probably be in Kharkov with her sister and new born niece. This trip is going to be so much fun. No agencies involved just him and me walking down Khreshatic, eating in the cafes and me introducing him to beautiful women. LOL....Good times

One of the most satisfying trips to the FSU for me was the first one I made as a married man. Have
a great time!

You did mean August 24th - Sept 6th - right?

I will also be in Kiev August 24.  I will spend 5 days there then train to Odessa for 5 days.  Then back to Kiev for my birthday.  September 4th I will then fly back to Germany!!!!  To bad you were not going a month sooner Greg.  I could of shared my Afghanistan stories over a beer with you and your best friend.

Easy to meet ladies walking down Kheshatic. Walk up and talk to them. Some will be cold as ice, others will be happy to talk to your buddy. Just make sure you're not doing all the talking Greg, they may start falling for you.

This is going to be so much fun. I remember just walking up to girls and start to talk to them. The ones that couldnt speak much English would just walk away. I did ok with those that wanted to be amused.LOL...Just something as simple as join us for coffee will do the trick most of the time. My friend is in good shape and he's a nice looking guy so he shouldnt have any trouble. I'm certainly no threat since I'm happily married. I think he'll have more options than he can shake a stick at. I hope so anyway. Like I said if  I wouldve only knew then what I know now but I have absolutely no complaints with the way my Ukrainian experience played out. The dollar looks a little stronger than last September. It was about 5 griv-$1 last year and now it's about 8-$1. Should be lots of fun.

Quite often you can be disappointed in thinking that your dollar will go further in such situations.  In reality what happens is that the prices in the local currency  are adjusted upward when the FX changes.  As I hear from my Ukrainian friends that at first food prices didn't go up much, but now they have mostly gone up to offset this decline in value of hryvina.  Also, the apartment owners will only quote you dollar prices and many of the best restaruants price in 'dollar equivalent' terms.

I will be in Kiev on Oct 3. But just for the day. If you want to have a beer a bit early....I'm with you.

Greg,

Bon voyage!

Do you want some griv?  I have about a $100 65 that I did not have time to exchange years ago.  Discovered it the other day when cleaning out my desk.

I sent you a PM Gator...Hope your family is well. Have you been back to eat at LaTerasita? I love that place. If anyone else has any $grivna$ laying around and your worried about them spoiling please feel free to contact me and I'll give you my address. The last thing you need laying around is worthless Ukrainian money. Rest assured I'll put it to good use and you'll feel much better about it being spent in all the right places. I just want everyone to know that i'm here for you if you need me in this situation. As a matter of fact, I'll even take Euros or Rubles. Heck I'll even take the old worn out American dollars that are so ratty and worn that you are ashamed to spend them. Feel free to send those as well. PM me for my address.

Still no takers on the hrivnyas. You guys still have time to get those in the mail to me before they go bad. Only about 3 weeks out now. The weather should be cool. The dollar is looking pretty good now. I have my apartment in the dead center of Kiev overlooking Independence Square for $50 a night. It's not the Ritz Carlton but I've stayed there for 7 years running now. A friend of mine in Kiev said business is very slow and things are not good. A lot of the cafes has closed their doors. Hotel rooms are still expensive. I've lost count on all my trips over but i'm excited about this one. My wife will be with her family so she'll be elated. One of my best friends will be there and we'll be hanging out, drinking good cheap Ukrainian beer, eating good and hopefully getting him set up with a nice girl.
