Yanukovych sacks Kyiv mayor Chernovetsky
Yesterday at 13:44 | Staff reports President Viktor Yanukovych on Nov. 16 issued decrees dismissing Leonid Chernovetsky as head of the Kyiv City State Administration, replacing him with Oleksandr Popov.

Prime Minister Mykola Azarov on Nov. 15 likened Chernovetsky to the Queen of England, saying Chernovetsky was performing a ceremonial function as Kyiv City Administration head.

Kyiv Mayor Leonid Chernovetsky, elected in 2006, was shortly thereafter appointed Kyiv City Administration chief by presidential decree. Former Mayor Oleksandr Omelchenko served under former President Leonid Kuchma following the same practice.

The state prosecutor's office and State Security Services are currently investigating numerous allegations against city administration officials and Kyiv City Council deputies related to committed acts of embezzlement and fraud. No top officials have been formally charged with any wrongdoing.

Sounds like good news Kievstar, BUT....It begs the question: Is the new guy going to be any better than the old guy?

I agree that more than likely things won''t change much. but we'll see. My guess is it will simply be a new group lining their pockets as they sell off city properties and assets. I also suspect the former mayor will remain abroad indefinitely.

More than likely new guy crooked.  I have been told Lugansk and Kharkov got hand picked new mayors as well this past month.  Kharkov mayor even has a very long violent confirmed criminal record.

I said last year there was a plan to take Kiev, Eastern Ukraine, and Crimea to Russia.  Looks like it is along the way unless EU steps in which I doubt as there more worried about the price of energy from Russia.

One thing for sure the normal Ukraine citizen will lose out.

Yanukovich is a big fan of Medvedev.... so he had to follow up the firing of the mayor of Moscow by copying the move.
