It seems entree into the EU is not the panacea some FSU countries imagined. Latvia is struggling so much economically, the capital of Riga sponsored a "Blonde March" to help cheer up the country.

Last night at the taco stand before walking home I struck up a conversation with an interesting guy.  Turns out he is a career diplomat and spent several years in Riga.  In his view it was the most depressing place he had ever worked, reason.. alcoholism and a lack of anything for the young people to do.. no future.. anyone with education is leaving to greener pastures in the EU...
