Match.com Now Doing Background Checks . . . Shades of IMBRA
« on: April 18, 2011, 09:32:16 AM »
It should come as little surprise, but Match.com has decided to perform background screening of its members in the wake of a class-action lawsuit. CNN article here -- http://www.cnn.com/2011/TECH/web/04/18/match.rape.lawsuit/index.html?hpt=Sbin

Interestingly, the class is made up of "all of Match.com's paying female members from August 2010 to the present.", so there may just be a little gender bias argument to be made.

In any case, it looks like the beginnings of IMBRA-type actions are taking form in the domestic market.

It looks like the "point a finger its someon elses fault and they are responsible mentality" has hit full stride in the Good Ole USA.

I think the capatolistic system will knock this in the head.

When Maria Cantwell was first starting to make a lot of noise about IMBRA there was a loud chorus of folks saying it could never get passed - and I tacitly agreed with them. I took away from that experience a couple of things:

* Never underestimate the 'power' that comes from sensationalized (and brutal) crimes against women.
* The great tendency in this country has become to legislate EVERYTHING - including (maybe especially) common sense.

FWIW

I think one of the things that hurt us in the IMBRA battle was we are so few and once we jump through the hoop our motivation to "really care" becomes far less.   When it comes to the general dating market I think nearly every single person in the country uses some form of internet dating and it might be a much larger oppostion voice to overcome.  I don't see IMBRA type regulations coming to sites like Match but with our stupid leaders anything is possible.

I'm curious to see the membership numbers in the next few months as the information trickles out.

You will have some men say they dont have anything to hide and be fine with it. But I think there will be a larger segment say they dont want Match doing a name check, not that they have anything to hide but the principle behind it.

The women members might increase because of the thought of being protected. :-\

I see the men with records start using false names. I wonder how Match will check that ?

It will be interesting.

The way I see it is that if it's transparent, it reduces the risk to women and makes things even just a little more difficult for sexual predators then I'm all for it.

Knew this would be coming.  This could be a big score for the law firm organizing this.  I'm sure they will be advertising everywhere for injured plantiffs, the more the merrier and the bigger the pot of gold.  Some law firms specialize in class actions and it is one big payday, not so much for the plantiffs--but for the lawyers who get PAID IN FULL for every billable nickel.

Oh BTW, I just read that three NY state legislators are proposing a bill that will form a registry for DV offenders a la sex offender registry. Let's see how far that goes.

I'm at an impasse..

On one hand in favor of informed choice, on the other trying to figure out what what this all has to do with love.

But I am beginning to realize that this whole inet dating thing will not go away.. Thus tending towards informed choice.
