no visa to Ukraine
« on: April 20, 2010, 10:16:11 AM »
Hello,
I see where an American citizen can enter Ukraine without a visa and stay up until 90 days.

What if an American entered Ukraine, was there about a month, then left to visit another country for a week, but then wanted to return to Ukraine for a short while?

Is there a waiting period between visits?

I don't believe so.  I did that on several occasions and never had a problem.  Actually I came home for a week and went back.  I don't think there are any restrictions on that and I don't think they care.

But there is now a restriction on the total number of days you can be in Ukraine without a visa.  I can't recall off the top of my head what it is, but it kicks in after the 90 days.

In theory (as in according to the law) it is 90 days in country out of every 180 day period.

In practice, enforcement is spotty BUT has occurred, particularly at airports where computer systems are being upgraded and access increased. Less likely on trains at least according to anecdotal reports.

Fines are more frequently levied for those exiting in violation of the stay limitations.

There is a risk of being refused re-entry if you attempt to re-enter in violation of the limits.

Yeah, that's true.  I wonder how exactly this is calculated?  I mean do they go by say a calendar year beginning in January, or do they begin counting backwards from *today* and include any accumulation of  days in country within the prior 180 day window?

On this last trip, if the latter is true, I was over the limit by a few days (because of an idiotic mistake in counting days... duh..., so I was a weeee bit concerned at the time of departure), but, nothing out of the ordinary happened at all at exit time.

There upgrading all there airports and computer systems.  A matter of time before they do not miss out on this revenue generator.  Euro 2012 is soon and they will be enforcing this rule no later than after this soccer tourney.

I had been doing the 90 day in/out visa hop for all of last year, leave Ukraine and re-enter on the same day again,  but their getting hotter on checking at Borispol. So I needed to sort out a visa, but because i was already in Ukraine, i was unable to get a visa of any sort to stay here. So after getting advise from another ex-pat , I went to the ukrainian embassy in Krakow, Poland, paid them $240 and got a 6 month visa, the same day, which i understand I can have extended here in Kharkov.
I was told by the Embassy in Poland, that if I was an American, I could have bought a 12 month Visa for only $160 - wheres the justice in that one !!

If you intend to stay here for more than 90 days in a 180 day period, then get a tourist visa sorted before you travel. Americans please check this info as it maybe different.

What does the UK charge for Ukraine citizens to visit UK.  Sometimes visa rates depend on how countries view each other.

Okay, was browsing as a guest, and looks like I can add a bit (for US citizens anyway), so first post it is. I asked about this while I was in Kiev last fall. The passport stamp you get at the port of entry (Borispol, border, port, etc) is good for 90 days out of a 180 day period as was already stated. The 180 days starts from the day you first enter Ukraine, not any specific date. Also, it's cumulative, not continuous, so if you wanted you could leave and return every other week as long as it doesn't add up to more than the 90. However if it's continuous this can be extended at any of the OVIR offices for 30 days at a time, up to the 180 day max. At that point you HAVE to leave if you don't want to take the chance of paying any penalties/bribes. Haven't tried the Krakow embassy trick yet, so not sure if/how this would affect getting an actual visa.

Only thing to be careful of is that you have to register with 3 days before your legal stay expires, I'm assuming due to paperwork or whatever. Just something to look out for.
