Well, I wouldn't probably say that these expenses are born because of my immigration, because they are spend directly on myself, not on government or travel carrier. They are also done by your choice; you may share a rent with someone and get it cheaper; or you may stay with your extended family for free, etc. Therefore I would not call it immigration expenses.

However, you are right that these expenses should be funded from your previous savings from home, as it it obvious that a new immigrant cannot have earned anything in Canada so far.

If you believe that it makes sense to calculate these amounts as well, you may want to take into account the mandatory amount of funds pro person that every immigrant must have ready at landing. For a single person is would be $ 11,086,=; for two people is it more, etc. One should show proof of unincumbered funds even before the visa is issued.

That's another $5,400 to be added to the total cost of immigration.. :(

Yeah, but when Lily finds a decent job she'll be able to recover that in about one month. :)

So the $5,400 comes out of your mandatory immigration funds.. That makes sense.. It brings the total to about $15,500 or 480,000 RR..

I have read that some prospective immigrants are rather impecunious in their home countries, and have to think really hard about how do they satisfy immigration requirements by showing the money in the bank that were in fact borrowed from someone else. Anyway, after landing they have to show that they meet the immigration requirements concernng bringing enough funds with them. Otherwise, they may be deemed unadmissible to Canada.

Never heard that someone really had to virtually show all their funds to the border officers, though. The officers rather ask people how much money do they carry with them, so the records go just from what do immigrants say to the officers.

Not surprising, since most people who can afford to emigrate are happy where they are.. Those who can't, do whatever they can to fool the authorities in order to have a chance at a better life.. There was a brief period (200 years? ;D) where they- the US and Canada- would let everyone in that wanted to come.. It says on their statue: Give me your tired, your poor, yada, yada, yada.. But it's really a monument to the past rather than a representation of the current state of affairs. Nobody wants the poor or the tired anymore, at least not until they're done with them.. 8)
