Birthdays
« on: May 19, 2010, 05:49:16 AM »
So, I am flying out to see a woman I met in several weeks for her birthday. This one seems to be important for her. It is her 25th. Is there somethng I should know beforehand in regards to this? Are there any traditions or significance to a 25th birthday in the Ukraine? Is there something I should be prepared for as her guy or expected to do on this occassion? Thanks in advance.

As I understand, the birthday person tends to have responsibilities as the host/hostess to drink with all the guest, entertain, and foot a big portion(all?) of the bill.   If I were you I'd ask her the same question you just asked here.  You may want to keep an eye on what location (bar/nightclub/restaurant) gets chosen for the festivities.  As her guy, my understanding is that you'll be expected to pay for things.

I have asked what she would like to do or what plans were needed. I ws told it did not matter as long as we were together.....
I am sure that I will foot the bill. That is a normal thing as her guy. Obviously I would like to do something special and just did not want to overlook anything.

In Latin cultures they have Quinceaneras, Bat Mitzvahs I suppose for Jewish women, etc.
She is not coming of age at 25, but is there something to this specific birthday or birthdays in general in the Ukraine that could help me?

*Note taken on the alcohol Shadow and have an IV prepared with a slow drip solution for the next several weeks ;)

That is correct... the birthday person is the host/hostess and is responsible for the cost of the 'party'... if at a restaurant, the host/hostess picks up the tab for all food/drinks, etc...  the guests will all bring gifts and/or money, but the tab is picked up by by whomever's birthday party it is... and as her guy in a serious relationship, that responsibility will fall to you.  And you'll also be expected to make some toasts to your girl, to peace, to happiness, to good luck, to good health, to friendship, to the polar ice caps, to migratory patterns of birds, and anything else you can come up with (only slightly joking).  So be prepared.  ;D

Since she could be a special woman in your life, give her lots of flowers. It'll make a statement to her and others that you are very interested in her. Hopefully another man at the party doesn't out do you in the flower department.

hi :)) hope I'm still in time :)

don't worry, there is no any special Ukrainian traditions for 25th birthday. Normally it is just a bigger party, more people are invited,  cause you turn quarter of century, so its kind of big deal :). we do have some special dates in our culture. for example some parents doesn't celebrate 13th birthday of their child, :) yes, we are That superstitious:)))), well ... some of us :))) then it goes 16th birthday, because we receive the passport when we are 16. then its
18th birthday, because we become adult at those age, then its 25, as quarter of century and half of youth, then its 33 for man, because its the age when Jesus died some people don't celebrate it too ( please don't laugh too loud :) ), then its 40, then 50. the most fun starts on 50th birthday :) my country is totally different to yours in the age questions. Here man 50 years old is a grandfather :) he behave the same as old person :) it is on its way to change, but still. :) so here people use to believe that after 50 there is no sexual life, because you have your children already and grandchildren, so no need to make a new ones :) so we have kind of comic ritual, when guests make kind of primitive version of penis (excuse my English) :) ( for example from carrot and two potatoes or cucumber and two onions ) :)  and this pseudo-pennis got "cut" by the wife of the guy, whose birthday it is :))) it symbolizes that since now, the man's "thing" :) belongs to his wife only and she decide to keep it for future or to throw away :)) normally women keep it :). it is very old ritual, nowadays people follow it only in some villages or sometimes in towns too when they are drunk enough :))

anyway.... going back to your topic :). BillyB was right about flowers - buy her 25 roses :) its common present : one rose for each year of life. :) also it is very traditional in my country to buy some gold. some bracelet or earrings necessary expensive very much - its a average gift for woman in my country :)  yes, she may expect you to pay the bill, because its also very much common here when man pick up the bill :)

what to do is your decision  :))

even if it wasn't helpful - hope you were smiling while reading it :))
